Jarvis J. KilgoreBradyJarvis J. Kilgore, age 86, of Brady, Texas, passed away Aug. 15, 2017. Jarvis was born on Sept. 27, 1930, in Brownwood, Texas, to Willie B. and Myrtie (Holland) Kilgore. His family moved to San Angelo in 1942 and he graduated from San Angelo High School in 1947.Jarvis worked for West Texas Utilities in San Angelo for 26 years. During the earlier years of his employment, he also worked at Santa Fe Depot, as a projectionist at the drive-in theaters, and as a collector for Wilkinson Drug and Gunter's. It was not uncommon for him to work three jobs to support his family. His work ethic was admired and appreciated by the many life-long friends he made along the way.Jarvis headed up the Kilgore family reunion for many years, held in Ballinger, Texas during the 50s and 60s. Every year he stayed up all night cooking the meat over a pit, and was the go-to person for about seventy-five family members who attended the three-day event.He retired from WTU as Credit Manager for the San Angelo office in 1978. Jarvis then purchased Welch Transfer and Storage Company from his former mother-in-law, Alice Mae Welch, and operated it for 10 years. During those years he and his wife Bernice managed the Wildewood Apartments, which was a brand-new apartment complex in San Angelo. After Bernice passed away in 1988, he soon sold the transfer business and eventually made plans to move to Brady, Texas. He bought a lake house at Brady Lake, cleared the entire lot leading to the lake, and built a boat dock. He owned and operated the convenience store and bait shop at the lake. Many good memories were made at Brady Lake, especially while fishing on his pontoon boat and visiting his neighbors.Jarvis was an outgoing person who loved cards, dominoes, pitching horseshoes, traveling, and people. He really missed hosting his weekly poker get-togethers. He enjoyed meeting people from other states during the years he traveled in his motorhome.Jarvis and Jill Jones Kilgore, a Brady native, were married on Sept. 29, 1995. They spent 22 happy years together. They had many good friends in Brady, and enjoyed traveling in the earlier years of their marriage. Jarvis and Jill were regulars at the Brady Senior Center. He felt blessed to have found someone to spend the rest of his life with. He was a Mason and a member of Concho Lodge No. 1260 for more than 50 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brady, Texas, and former member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church in San Angelo.He was preceded in death by his parents; his two sons, Richard and Scott Kilgore; his step-son, Michael Blanek; both of his sisters, Thelma Davis and Willie Chandler Steen; and his favorite cousin and lifelong friend, Bill Kilgore.Jarvis is survived by his wife Jill; his daughter, Vicki McCollum and her husband, Don; four step-children, Cheryl Lock and husband Tommy, Beverly Whitehead and husband Jimmie, Louis Blanek, Jr. and Melissa Vaughn and husband Tony; and daughter-in-law Joanne. Jarvis had 11 grandchildren, Jeffrey McCollum (Karen), Bryan McCollum (Merisa), Kristen McCollum (Matthew Kamas), Brandon Lock (Heather), Brady Lock (Logan), Jamie Whitehead (Ginger), Shane Whitehead (Tabby), Jason Whitehead (Summer), Chase Blanek, Colin Blanek and Curtis Vaughn (Alyssa). He has 14 great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.We wish to thank Brady West Nursing Center for their loving care of Jarvis for the past few months. We especially thank his favorite girls, Lorri, Christine, Ashley and Reagan for their genuine kindness. Speaking about the entire facility, many times Jarvis said, "They just couldn't be any nicer to me." We are grateful to all of the nurses, aides, staff and employees. We wish we could list them all.Jarvis told everyone that he knew that he had lived a great life and probably wouldn't change a thing. He was a thankful person.Visitation for friends and family will be held at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels in Brady, Texas from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017.
