Janice Marie Dimick Obituary
Feb 28, 1937 - Oct 20, 2017
This obituary is administered by:
Janice Marie (Wirth) Dimick, 80Indianapolis - Janice Marie (Wirth) Dimick, a college professor, author, certified marriage and family therapist, certified clinical social worker, psychometrist, wife and mother died on October 20, 2017, from complications due to dementia. She was 80 years old and had lived in Indianapolis since 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Kenneth McColl Dimick, whom she met at a fraternity/sorority party at Oregon State. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009. She is also preceded in death by her brothers John Wirth and Marion "Jack" Wirth and by her parents Arthur and Helen Wirth.Janice was born on a farm in Salem, Oregon on February 28, 1937. She was a graduate of Salem High School and received her bachelor's degree in education from Oregon State University where she was a member of Chi Omega social fraternity. Janice put herself through college by working double shifts during the summers at two local canneries and holding numerous jobs during the school year, including sewing and typing for her classmates. She received her masters and doctoral degrees from Ball State University, where she later taught elementary education. Dr. Dimick was hardworking, unconventional and adventurous. She and her family spent six semesters living in Europe while her husband taught, through Ball State University, in England, Germany, Greece and Italy. During these stays, Janice home schooled her children, immersing them in the local language and culture, taking them to important historic places and to see works of art. Her perspective on the education of her children was rather unique: no tests, no math; just keep a diary of your experiences, which she stridently reviewed for grammatical errors. Dr. Dimick was also ahead of her time as a proponent of equality for men and women, requiring her eight-year-old son to wash his own little league baseball uniform and steering her daughter way from taking the traditional high school sewing, cooking and typing classes because she should aspire to more scholarly things. Her children will always be grateful for her forward thinking and life lessons she taught us.Janice is survived by her sister, Joan Slegelmilch (Loren) of Medford, Oregon and brother Jim Wirth, children Julia "Jill" Dimick (Tom Davis) and Dr. Jeffrey Dimick (Akiko), her grandchildren, Meg and Ken Dimick, Scott (Carol), Grant and Ashley Davis, great grandchildren, Claire and Luke Davis, and many nieces and nephews. The family thanks the memory care staff of Riverwalk Village for their years of care, comfort and compassion. In lieu of gifts of remembrance and condolence, the family requests that you read a book to a young loved one or donate a book to your public library. Those gifts would bring Janice great joy and best celebrate her life dedicated to education, reading and experience.Arrangements: Simplicity Funeral & Cremation Care.
