WINTERVILLE - Mrs. Jane Stroud Mellon, beloved wife and mother, died Saturday, October 23, 2010. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, October 30, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Winterville Christian Church. Her parents were Cecil Nixon and Mary Velma Stroud and stepmother, Esther Hardee Stroud. She was born on May 15, 1934, and lived in Kinston until, as a teenager, her family moved to Morehead City, N.C. She received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Duke University in the 1950s. After teaching school in North Carolina and Florida, she lived and taught abroad as an Air Force officer's wife. She and her family moved to her husband's family farm in Winterville, N.C., in 1974 after her husband's retirement from the Air Force. She spent her years in Winterville as a homemaker and was active both as a community volunteer and member of the Winterville Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Anne Harvell. She is survived by her husband, James Mellon; and daughters, Jane Bofenkamp and husband Brad of Wake Forest, and Mary Mellon of Winterville; and her granddaughter, Eva Jane Bofenkamp.
