James Malone Obituary

Sep 02, 2016 - Jan 18, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
James "Jim" Malone, 87 years old, died on Oct. 18, 2016, with his wife, family and friends at his bedside. Jim was born on Sept. 5, 1929, in Hoquiam, Wash., to Mark and Ellen Malone. He graduated from R.A. Long high school in 1947. Jim enlisted in the Army from July 1948 until retirement on Oct. 31, 1971. Jim served during the Korean War and two terms in Vietnam, received the Bronze Star medal in 1962; was recognized by high officials in the Chinese and Korean government for 25-plus years for lobbying for the American Legion; and was Past Department Commander '88-'89 American Legion Post 28. Jim visited every Legion post, except Bethel, Alaska, during his year as commander. Jim, being very active in the American Legion, laid the Memorial wreath at Fort Richardson for 55 years, missing only one year when he was in Vietnam. Jim was very proud of this honor. He helped build the current American Legion Post 28, going after work each night. Jim was instrumental in getting Boys & Girl State applications/interviews to the high schools for 20-plus years; he received the Mayors Award for Public Service for volunteering as Veterans Affairs Commission from February 1997- February 2003; worked on the VA planning committee for the Muldoon Clinic; was a lifetime member of the VFW; and this past year, October 2015, Jim was selected to go on the Alaskan Honor Flight #5. After retiring from the Army, Jim worked in finance at MLP for 16 years, retiring in 1988. Jim loved to read and travel, whether that be by air or for long car trips. He enjoyed weekly luncheons at Denny's with longtime friends, Cayra Saden and Bill Bishop. Jim is survived by his new bride, Elexzanderia "Dolly" Carr; stepson, Tim Creque of Anchorage; mother-in-law, Bessie Carr; "special" friends, Kim and Cecil Barrows, along with their family and friends of Anchorage; sisters, Margaret "Mickey" Hugill of Lacey, Wash., and Kathy "Kaki" Nelson (Ken) of Portland, Ore.; and a host of nieces, cousins and nephews in Germany, Ohio, Chicago, Ill., and Tennessee; not to mention many friends in Alaska. Jim will be remembered as a man of faith, by his kind heart, being very generous and that big smile on his face which made those baby blue eyes sparkle even more. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Jack, who died at birth; brother, Larry; sister, Mary Beth; and his first wife of 52 years, Maria. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at noon at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 825 South Klevin Street in Anchorage, and interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Legacy Witzleben Chapel. To share words of comfort with the family, please visit www.legacyalaska.com.
