James Louis Weber Obituary

Jun 05, 1924 - Oct 17, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Jim Weber, 92, passed away October 17, 2016 in Eugene, Oregon due to age-related causes. He was born on June 5, 1924 in Menomonie, Wisconsin to Paul Allen Weber and Lillian Bertha Clara (Hecklinger) Weber. He had an older brother, Eugene 'Gene' Allen Weber, who predeceased him. Jim spent the first 26 years of his life in British Columbia, Canada. He attended school on Vancouver Island in the town of Garrett; living in a logging camp where his father worked for the Campbell River Timber Company. In 1940 the family left Vancouver Island and homesteaded a 2200 acre cattle ranch, known as Big Lake Ranch, in central British Columbia. When they were teenagers, Jim and Gene both learned to play the accordion and would entertain at weekend dances. Jim was a born entertainer and those early days launched him into a lifetime of singing, storytelling, and playing the accordion at social events. The 1940's were a rugged time to live on a ranch in Central British Columbia -- no electricity and very primitive plumbing. Jim became an avid outdoorsman and a recognized hunting guide. Years later he often returned to the wilds of British Columbia and Alberta for hunting trips and to visit his many friends. During WWII, the Provincial Government of British Columbia held Jim back from joining the Canadian armed services; and instead, assigned him to work at all the nearby ranches for the duration of the war. In 1950 the ranch was sold and the family moved to the United States. From Canada, Jim brought a trove of great memories that would sustain and bring him happiness his entire life. Jim settled in Bend, Oregon and learned the skills to become a Cat Skinner. He eventually moved to Eugene and for 20-plus years he worked for the Lane County Public Works Department, helping to build many of our local highways and roads. Jim loved his job with the County. He had a great feel for operating heavy equipment, and he was called back into service several times after retirement. In Eugene, he met Delta Outka and they were married on May 20, 1957. Their home 'on the hill' in Goshen, with its garden, white fences, cows in the pasture, and view of the Cascade mountain range, was the backdrop for many happy years entertaining family and friends. After retirement, Jim and Delta became snow-birds; spending their winters in Hemet, California and Yuma, Arizona. They enjoyed camping in Central Oregon and also traveled to Canada, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the Eastern United States. While they had no children, they were the favorite aunt and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Jim and Delta attended the Creswell Presbyterian Church. She passed away in August, 2013 after 56 years of marriage. Jim's family would like to thank the caregivers at South Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tender care of Jim during the last few months of his life. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gene; his wife, Delta; Delta's sister, Henrietta; and Delta's brothers, Linton, Clifford, and Leland, along with all of their spouses. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley Weber, of Eugene; and his nieces and nephews. As he requested, there was no public memorial service. He is interred at Lane Memorial Gardens alongside Delta. There will be a family Celebration of Life at a later date. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to a .
