James Edward (Ted) McLaughlin, passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2008 in Lighthouse Point, Fla. Ted was born on October 26, 1937, and was the eldest son of James Joseph McLaughlin and Catherine Waters McLaughlin. He was a native of Montrose, Pa. Ted was devoted to his wife, Barbara and they were married for 49 years. He will be dearly missed by his son, Greg and his daughters, Diane McLaughlin, Beth McLaughlin Long and Ellen McLaughlin O'Connor and their spouses. His five grandchildren Jack, Claire and Grace Long, James and Anne Marie McLaughlin were cherished by him. Ted came from a large, close family and is survived by his brothers and sisters, Richard, Charle, Sharon, Cathy and Carol. Ted attended Montrose Schools and graduated from Montrose High School. He graduated from Penn State with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He was a member of Tao Beta Pi and Phi Mu Alpha scholastic honoraries and Triangle Fraternity. He received his MBA from Boston University. After completing the General Electric Management Training Program, he held various positions in Massachusetts in GE plants and at Honeywell Computer. In 1968, Mr. McLaughlin moved with his family to Pompano Beach to become President of Atlantic Coast Electronics, a small printed circuit manufacturer. After the company's sale to Tyco, he was a Tyco vice president and founded Piedmont Circuits and Atlantic Backplane in North Carolina. After leaving Tyco he was the owner of Continental Circuits until his retirement. After retiring, Ted and Barbara returned to their hometown of Montrose where they lovingly restored an old Victorian home and became summer residents for over 20 years. During that period, they also traveled the world, each year exploring a new continent. He was a natural leader and contributing to his community was important to him. As a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, he served over 30 years as a lector, was past President of the Men's Club and chaired the rectory and stained glass window fund raiser. He was also a member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Montrose. Ted served as Lighthouse Point City Commissioner from 1982 to 1989, led the fund raising effort to build the Lighthouse Point Library and chaired The Lighthouse Point Plant Fair for over 10 years. He was past President of Pompano Beach Civitan International, a member of Exchange Club, a past Director of the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Montrose Lions Club. An avid golfer and boater, he was a member of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Corinthians, the Montrose Club and past Commodore of the Royal Palm Yacht Club and Country Club. Ted enjoyed playing the baritone horn in the Deerfield Pops, the Lenoxville Band and the Binghamton Musikverein German Band. Memorial donations may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008, at Kraeer Funeral Home, 1199 E. Sample Road, Pompano Beach, with a special service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Lighthouse Point on Saturday, October 25, 2008.
