James Byrd Quarles "Jim Byrd/Jimmy", age 83, departed peacefully from this life the morning of Sunday, June 28, 2020 in his home, after an extended illness. Jimmy, sometime known as "Handsome Jimmy", "Butter Bean", and "Player" was the son of the late James A. Quarles and Ethel M. Quarles, born January 22, 1937, in Louisa, VA. Jimmy attended Louisa Training School and eventually graduated from A.G. Richardson High School where he was an exceptional basketball player. He later joined the United States Air Force, where he served as an Airman Third Class until he was honorably discharged in April 1959. Upon his return from the service, Jimmy worked as a meat cutter for Safeway Inc. for over 20 years. He worked for the U.S. Government for 20 years, of which he was employed as a facility maintenance technician at the VA Hospital for 12 years, upon retiring. Everyone who was acquainted with Jimmy knew of his quick wit, unique laugh, kind, and compassionate spirit. He was a comedian and jokester to say the least. He loved listening to jazz, blues and oldies but goodies music. He was well known for his clean and sharp sense of style. He often had an unusual way of greeting people, women- "wet kisses on the cheek" and men- "knuckle sandwiches on the head". He had names to describe everyone and it usually wasn't the name your family gave you! He liked fishing, playing numbers, working on cars, and was great at playing checkers. Back in the day, he liked talking trash on his CB and loved to eat bizarre delicacies such as, possum, squirrel, deer, pig feet and frog legs. He was a great cook and loved to give advice to all who would listen. He valued supporting his family and friends. He was loving and caring to all he met. Jimmy was preceded in death by his brother, William King and sisters Emma Jean Jones, Dorothy Bishop, and Juanita Farmer. Jim Byrd is survived by and will be forever remembered by his two loving children, son James "Kevin" Quarles (Detra Robinson), daughter Asia Stoddard (Joseph); brother Michael Quarles, sisters, Louise Russell, Patricia Day, and Barbara Reed, one sister-in-law Lillie Mae King; and former spouse Yvonne Quarles. He leaves to cherish his memories, seven grandchildren, Damarly Stoddard, KeVonna Quarles, James Quarles Jr. “KJ”, Jomar Stoddard, Joseph Stoddard “BJ”, Kayla Quarles, Janyia Stoddard; two great grandchildren, Wasir Quarles Akil and Charliegh Kittrell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
