Jacob John Huitema of East Tawas passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014 under the loving care of his family and hospice, age 66 years. Jacob was born on Jan. 4, 1948 in Goshen, Ind. to John and Mary Huitema. He graduated from high school in New Paris, Ind. and soon after, enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served our country for 8 1/2 years. After his honorable separation from the Air Force, Jacob moved to Michigan and later became employed at U.S. Gypsum where he worked until his retirement as a quarry shop supervisor. Jacob was a very talented man, both with his hands and his mind. He was skilled with carpentry, wood working, and playing with local music ensembles. He had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling to various scenic destinations. He also enjoyed involvement and giving of his time with volunteer groups and helping anyone in need. Above all, Jacob truly adored and cherished his grandchildren and the time spent together. He will be truly missed, but never forgotten. Jacob is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Sharon Huitema of East Tawas, to whom he married on Aug. 15, 1970; two loving sons, Chuck Huitema of East Tawas and Matt (Carrie) Huitema of East Tawas; three grandchildren, Taylor, Zachary and Nathan Huitema; his parents, John and Mary Huitema of New Paris, Ind.; and siblings, Tom, Lucinda and Betty. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in East Tawas with Reverend Phil Seitz and Reverend Rebecca Owlsley officiating. His family will welcome friends at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Those wishing to make a memorial are encouraged to consider Christ Episcopal Church in his name.
