MARTINSVILLE — Jack Lee Wappes, 80, passed away in his sleep on Friday, August 15, 2014, at The Waters of Martinsville. Jack was born on September 5, 1933, in Auburn, Indiana, to the late Howard and Vera (Provines) Wappes. He graduated from the now DeKalb High School in 1952 and served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958. He met the love of his life, Sally (Harris) Wappes, on July 4, 1955, during a Fourth of July party while on furlough. They married on September 17, 1955, in Germfask, Michigan. In 1957, Jack and Sally settled in Martinsville, Indiana, where he became active in the community. Jack was a member of the following organizations: Masonic Lodge No. 74 F & AM, Elk's Lodge No. 1349, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1127; Order of Eastern Star – Martha Chapter 217, Murat Shrine Club, and Indiana State Seniors Golf Association. He was an avid golfer who won many tournaments, being especially proud of his hole-in-one at the Martinsville Country Club. After his Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force, Jack began a long career in sales and marketing. He spent many years traveling across the U.S. as a representative of companies such as Nabisco, Federal Signal, Indiana Fire Apparatus, and Michigan Chrome & Chemical. Jack was also an entrepreneur who enjoyed self-employment. In 1982, the Wappes family purchased the Maple Grove Village and Store in Green Township. Prior to his diagnosis of, and successful battle to overcome, cancer other business ventures included real estate and owning/operating a bus for the Martinsville School District. Jack was preceded in death by his daughter, Colleen Wappes; his parents, Howard and Vera (Provines) Wappes; and a brother, Perry Wappes. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Sally (Harris) Wappes, and their son, Steve Wappes. He will also forever be in the hearts of Michele and Hope Knoy; Hope whom he especially adored and who gave him the honorary title of "Grandpa Jack." Family and friends are invited to come celebrate Jack's life during calling hours on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at Costin Funeral Chapel. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Morgan County Humane Society to honor his memory.
