Jack Rice1925 - 2013Long time labor leader and softball great, Jack Rice, 88, has died. He succumbed to cancer on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County.A lifelong resident of Kenosha, born on Oct. 4, 1925; he was the son of the late Ardell L. and Lucille (Thomey) Rice.On Oct. 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Frances M. Toots Funk at St. George Catholic Church. Jack and Fran devoted their lives to the Kenosha community; loving Kenosha as much as Kenosha loved them. Sadly Fran passed away August 2006.Jack served as the International Representative for the U.A.W. for many years. Following his retirement, he worked as the Bailiff in the courtroom of Judge Bruce Schroeder.Jack became an iconic figure in the Kenosha community. An instrumental founding member of the Labor- Management Council; Jack was a longtime leader for the United Auto Workers Local 72 and was the co-organizer of the Kenosha Labor Roundtable. Political leaders went to Jack for advice for over 60 years. He served on the City of Kenosha Civil Service Commission; the Bosman for Mayor Steering Committee; and Kenosha Baseball Committee. Jack played primarily first base for both 16 inch and 12 inch fast pitch softball in Kenosha for many years most of that time playing with Ts Tap and Kingsury. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Kenosha Softball Hall of Fame.His past memberships included: Board of Directors-Kenosha Mental Health Association; Kenosha Area Economic Development Council; Wisconsin State Board of Vocational, Technical & Adult Education, Board of Directors-Kenosha Achievement Center; Vice President-Senior Community Services of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc., Senior Aides Program; Board of Directors-Racine Urban League; Greater Kenosha Development Corporation, American Cancer Society, St. Catherines Hospital Advisory Board; Wisconsin Parkside Labor Advisory Council; Board of Directors of Carthage College; Re-employment & Education Assistance Program,; Kenosha County Retention Committee; Board of Directors of Waybridge House; and Kenosha Night at the Brewers Committee. He also held past memberships to the Kenosha County Board; Kenosha Police and Fire Commission; 1971 Consumer Protection Task Force, 1971 Commerce and Industry Task Force, Board of Directors-St. Joseph High School; State of Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board; Kenosha County Juvenile Crime Commission, Kenosha County Parks Commission and Kenosha County Advocates for Youth. Jack received honors as the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha Man & Youth Award and the Walter Ruether Award. He was an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Kenosha West demonstrating true leadership in humanitarian service with concerns in health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment, while training and mentoring young leaders.Jack played on various golf leagues including the Rotary West Golf League and was a fiercely loyal Cub fan!Jacks legacy lives on in his children, Terry (Mary) Rice, Jackie Krifka and George (Debra) Rice; his three grandchildren, Daniel (Jenna Danoski) Rice, Nicholas (Alyssa) Rice and Elizabeth (Tony) Jacob and a great-granchild on the way. He is further survived by his special friend, Sharon Fasci along with many friends and admirers. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and sister, Rosemary Holmgren. Funeral services for Jack will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, with a prayer service at the Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 4804 - 7th Avenue. Interment will follow in St. George Cemetery.
