Horst H. WerderNaples, FLHorst H. Werder, 93, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2017 in Naples, FL.He was born on August 13, 1924 in Stettin, Germany and educated in Europe and the United States. He served in the US Army's Military Intelligence Service from 1943 to 1945, was wounded in action while attached to the 2nd Cavalry Group in the Third Army, worked with the German and Austrian resistance movements and was a member of the team that interrogated the members of the German High Command West.He then returned to complete his studies at Columbia University, earning BS, LL.B and JD degrees. As a lawyer he was admitted to the New York and Illinois bars, and was a partner of the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie where he headed the unfair competition and trademark practice from 1961 to 1989, when he retired. During this time he also was a lecturer in Columbia Law School's course on Counseling in International Transactions. In addition he lectured at the Sorbonne, Cambridge University, Meiji University (Tokyo), John Marshall Law School and the American Management Association, the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Republic of China's Bureau of Standards. For many years he was also a member of the International Committee of the US Trademark Association, on the Editorial Board of the Trademark Reporter and on the Committee on Trademarks of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and of the Chicago Bar Association.He was predeceased by his wives Dona P. Werder and Petina A. Werder. He is survived by his wife Elaine J. Carp -Werder and the children of his first marriage Claude Werder and Julia Werder, and by his sister Renate-Maria Thayer.In accordance with his wishes there will be no funeral service and his ashes will be scattered over the Gulf of Mexico.Memorial donations may be made to your local Public Broadcasting Station.
