Horak, Helen M.Helen M. Horak, age 97 of Kewaunee died on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Atrium Care Center, Kewaunee. She was born on March 15, 1919 in Algoma to the late Ernest and Lena (Heldman) Braun and after the death of her mother she was adopted by Edward and Mae Westfal. Helen graduated from Algoma High School in 1936. She then worked in her dad's meat market where she met Joseph Horak and they were married June 1, 1938 and he preceded her in death on February 26, 1988.She and Joe enjoyed many activities together including dancing, fishing, baseball, horse back riding and crocheting, playing cribbage and pinochle. Helen had a very adventurous spirit, and learned to fly a plane, something she was able to do even in her 90's. She worked along side of her husband who was the Kewaunee County sheriff for 10 years, where she served as the under-sheriff. She took many classes to in law enforcement, including classes in Chicago and Silver Lake College, and NWTC where she got her degree in police science. She worked as a deputy in the Kewaunee County jail until she was 75 years old where she obtained a life times worth of stories and jokes, which she enjoyed re-telling for the rest of her life. She was a valuable member of the Kewaunee County Human Services board for more than 30 years, and she took this job very seriously; after attending conferences she brought back a wealth of knowledge to the community. Helen traveled extensively throughout her life with many friends and relatives. Her favorite vacation spot was Hawaii where she enjoyed a really good Mai Tai. She had been to many states including Maine, Florida, Texas and also Mexico and Canada. While she and Joe would have liked to have 12 children, after Diane's birth in 1940, Helen was injured and could not have any more children. Joe and Helen raised Diane in Algoma, where Helen lived until after Joe's death. Diane married Harold Gallenberger in 1960 and they had 4 children, Mary, Mike, Joe and Paul. Mary married Dave Tesch and they live in Seymour with their two children, Elizabeth and Jonathan. Mike married Laura Bishop, and they now live in Kewaunee with their 4 children, DJ, Mikayla, Wes and Thomas. Joe lives and works in Kewaunee with his brother Mike at Gallenberger Dairy Records. Paul married Sally Stearns and now lives in Eden Prairie, Minnesota with their 4 children Sam, Charles, Anna and Addie. Helen is also survived by nieces and nephews: Sue Murzyn, Joellen (David) Wallang, BeAnn McCaufey, Marigian Carpenter and Bill (Peggy) Braun.Helen is preceded in death by her husband Joe, her sisters Mary (Jerry) Olsen, and Ann Rosul, and her brother Joseph (Helen) Braun. Friends may call at Holy Rosary Church in Kewaunee on Wednesday, January 11from 9:00 am until the time of service. Mass and Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am by Father Jim Dillenberg. Helen will be entombed at the Shrine of the Good Shephard Mausoleum on Bay Settlement Road in the town of Scott.Go to
