Harry Miley Obituary

Dec 29, 1927 - Jan 03, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Harry MileyHarry E. Miley passed away quietly on August 3, 2017, at home in Tapestry Senior Living. He was born on December 29, 1927, in Hahira, Georgia, as the son of Ida Fields Cole and Perry Glen Miley. A commemoration of his life will take place on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, beginning with a brief graveside internment at Roselawn Cemetery on Piedmont Drive at 10:00 a.m. A full service will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church, 120 W Park Ave., Tallahassee, FL, followed by a reception in the church parlor. Arrangements are being handled by Culley's MeadowWood of Tallahassee. After graduation from high school, like so many Georgians of his generation, Harry gravitated to Atlanta as the booming city offered great opportunity. There he met and, on May 8, 1946, married Eleazar ("Lisa") Teasley who became the absolute love of his life for the next 71 years. Soon the young parents of two daughters, Harry and Lisa formed a like-minded, loving partnership as they both worked hard to provide a simple but close and creative family life. The family settled permanently in Tallahassee in 1959, after several years of making their home in various Georgia and Florida cities, in order to accommodate Harry's professional advancement. After 39 years with the Great Western Bank Financial Services in Georgia and Florida, Harry retired and joined Lisa in the ownership of Betton Brokers Realty. There he served as the financial manager until his final retirement in 2002.With an exceptional memory for sports information, Harry was a dedicated baseball and football enthusiast. He thoroughly enjoyed the college football season with a bag of boiled peanuts by his side and everyone knew better than to distract him on game days! Harry will be fondly remembered for his enduring love of nature, which embraced every kind of flower, vegetable and living creature. From the birds who called to him at feeding time each morning to the many plants he cultivated and shared over the years, he used his strong back and gentle hands to sustain and enhance the world's natural beauty. It's safe to say that he never saw a daylily he didn't try to purchase, plant, propagate or identify by name. As well, he never, ever passed up a fruit or vegetable stand. By his kind and gentle spirit, conscientious work ethic, and strength of character, Harry Miley made a lasting mark on the lives of all who had the good fortune to know him. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, citizen and true gentleman, we all celebrate his presence in our lives. Harry's greatest legacy is one of example. With a quiet humility and an unwavering faith in honesty and fairness, he understood how to navigate a tough and complex world to lead a life of the highest integrity. Ever grateful for his own blessings, Harry's compassion for those less fortunate was a guiding force in his everyday life. He accepted others unconditionally and, in partnership with Lisa, expressed thoughtful generosity in so many ways. Over the years, there were many who came to think of Harry and Lisa as parental figures, finding them a source of family connection and loving support.Harry was preceded in death by his brothers Lamar and Remer Miley, brother Frank Tilfred Cole (Dorothy) and sisters Lorene Cole Cooper and Judy Cole Gilbert. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lisa, daughters Carol Sheppard (Neil) of Tallahassee, FL and Chris Novey (Edward) of Athens, GA., sister Evangeline Cole Griffin of Acworth, GA and brother Benny Cole (Betty) of Valdosta, GA. Grandchildren are Melissa Kerns of Nashville, TN, David Kerns (Anu) and their daughters, Hannah and Lea, of Copenhagen, Denmark, Daniel Novey of Los Angeles, CA, and Levi Novey (Alicia) and their daughter, Coral, of Arlington, VA. Harry was blessed with many nephews and nieces. Having lost their father early in life, Harry's nephew, Barry Miley (Tronda) of Walker, LA, and Harry's niece, Christina Miley Krogh (Bill) of Lovettsville, VA, felt especially blessed to think of Harry as a true father figure. Though there may be too many to name, those who also bear a family kinship are: Melissa's and David's father, David V. Kerns, Jr. (Sherra) of Nashville, TN; Greg Grabowski of Tallahassee, FL; Tom Evans of Melrose, FL; John Moser and his sister Lee Ann Moser, both of Baton Rouge, LA, along with his sister, Mary Moser Watts of Tallahassee, FL.Harry's family would like to thank the many family members and friends who traveled from near and far in order to pay tribute to his life and memory. Special thanks also to caregivers who so kindly and capably cared for Harry over this last year: Tracey Hamilton, Nartosa Miller, Phyllis Alexander, Nancy Knight, Tania Taylor and Jamalya (Tammy) Gaines, as well as the nurses of Big Bend Hospice, the staff of Tapestry Senior Living and Allegro Senior Living. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home, 51 Children's Way, Enterprise, FL 32725.
