This obituary is administered by:
WATERLOO —Harold Christopher VanderHorst went to be with our Lord after being His faithful servant for 72 years on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He was born on May 20, 1944, to Harold Henry VanderHorst and Charolette Francis Theodora Small. They both preceded him in death, as well as a great-grandchild, Preston. Harold was known as Chris by his friends and family. He was the loving husband to Theresa, whom he married on January 17, 1970. She lives on, remembering the love of her life after 46 years of marriage. Chris had six brothers and sisters: Teresa Holder, Cecelia Fisher, Michael (Andrea) VanderHorst, Leslie VanderHorst, Elizabeth (Rock) VanderHorst Hoffman and Kathy (Dan) Jones. He had one brother-in-law, Jim (Ginny) Batistick. He is also survived by his six children: Christopher (Susan) VanderHorst of Onsted, Michigan, Michelle VanderHorst of Adrian, Michigan, Dean (Stephanie) VanderHorst of Waterloo, Indiana, Yvonne (Kevin) Busdeker of Woodridge, Illinois, Charolette (Julio) Martinez of Granger, Indiana, and Andrea (David) Deihl of Waterloo, Indiana. He also had 21 grandchildren: Ashleigh, Brandon, Ashley, Courtney, Julie, Dakota, Mel, Joshua, Brittany, Justin, Jacob (Leah), Josiah, Jozie, Dawson, Charles, Madison, Lincoln, Reagan, Kennedy, Charolette, Elliott, and No. 22, Barrett who will arrive later this year. Chris served proudly in the United States Coast Guard from February 24, 1963, through September 23, 1969. Chris' other loves in life were hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Mudjaw Bowman Archery Club, Pope & Young, and Compton's Traditional Archery clubs for many years. He was an avid bowhunter and had many trophy animals to show for it, including bear, deer, caribou, bull elk, mountain goats and moose. His love of fishing was just as great, and he spent a lot of days of his Alaska and Louisiana vacations out on his boat fishing or just reeling them in from shore. Along with Theresa as Mrs. Claus, Chris served as Santa's helper for many years and brought smiles to many children's faces. He did this all on a volunteer basis with all donations going to American Legion Post 202. Chris was a lifetime Boy Scout and leader and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts of America, for his volunteer service as a Scout master. One of his sons and two of his grandsons achieved the Scouts' highest rank of Eagle Scout with his guidance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016, at St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1098 C.R. 39, Waterloo, Indiana, with Father David Carkenord officiating.
