Harold Eugene EklundUrbandaleHarold (Doc) Eklund passed away at Mercy West Medical Center on October 23, 2016.Harold was born on the family farm in Dayton, Iowa on May 1, 1932. He attended Dayton Schools, Ft. Dodge Community College and Cornell College where he met his wife of 62 years, Audrey Jean (Smith) Eklund. After graduation, he attended medical school at the University of Iowa, followed by residency at Broadlawns Hospital. Harold then went into medical practice at Urbandale Medical Clinic with Dr. Don Green where they were also Drake Student Health Physicians and the first to join Mercy Hospital Clinics. He concluded his professional career as Medical Director for John Deere Corp. He was a Founding Fellow and president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, president of Polk County Medical Society and volunteered over 25 years in the Free Medical Clinic. As a pilot, he was a member of the Flying Physicians Association and served as an examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration. As an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow he developed his passion for hunting and fishing. He shared his love of travel and adventure with family. Later in life he began collecting a variety of antiques including cartridges and automobiles. As a devoted Christian and Elder in Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church, God was his guiding light and family was the light of his life. Harold is survived by his wife Audrey; daughter Linda Eklund-Francis (partner Rick Rosadillo) of Hawaii, son Charles Eklund of Des Moines and son John (Melanie) Eklund of Texas; grandchildren Rosalind (Daniel) Burgess of London, Carolyn Francis of Georgia and Trevor Eklund of Texas; sisters-in-law Darlene Eklund and Mary Eklund and many nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents Raymond and Eugenia Eklund; brother's Verne and Deane and sister Jeanne Lorraine (Gene) McClaskey.Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. October 29, 2016 at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church at 4601 Douglas Avenue, Des Moines.
