Hallie (Hal) Wesley Markham1925 - 2014Hallie (Hal) Wesley Markham, 89, died on May 16, 2014, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield, Oregon. He was born in Dexter, Oregon, on May 9, 1925, to John Walton Markham and Hattie May Blood. He was raised in Eugene, where he ran a paper route on a bicycle. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served aboard the USS Mugford during World War II as an electrician. Afterward, he returned to Oregon and graduated from Eugene High School in 1947. Hal married Janice Papell, who has since died. They had two sons, James Markham and Ronald Markham. He then worked in Portland on trolleys before returning once more to Eugene. Hal married his second wife, Beverle Taylor, in 1953. They did not have children and were later divorced. In 1958, he married Mary Richardson and lived with her and her daughter, Kathi Beelman at their riverfront home in Eugene. Meanwhile, Hal pursued a steady position with Southern Pacific Railroad, where he worked as a railroad engineer for several decades until he retired at age 60. After he retired, Hal was active in track and field events as an NCAA track official. He was an avid University of Oregon sports fan and watched every game if possible. Hal attended monthly breakfasts with a group of fellow Eugene High School graduates. He and Mary were very involved at the First Baptist Church of Eugene for more than 30 years, and also attended River Road Baptist and Immanuel Baptist Church.Hal and Mary also traveled with Mobile Missionary Assistance Program (MMAP), building churches throughout the country. Hal will be remembered for his generosity, his great sense of humor and his love for classic cars and sports cars.He was preceded in death by his parents, his half-brother Donnie Markham, his son James Markham and his great-granddaughter Ashley Rice.He is survived by his half-sister, Suzanne Huffman, of Eugene; his half-brother Howard Harris, of Burney, California; his son Ronald Markham, of Las Vegas; his granddaughter Veronnica Rice, of Las Vegas; and his great-grandson Jared, of Las Vegas. Mary Margaret Markham1931 - 2015Mary Margaret Markham, 83, of Eugene, died Sunday, January 18, at Sheldon Oaks assisted living in Eugene.A joint memorial service for Mary and her late husband Hallie Markham will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 7, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 3050 Game Farm Rd. in Springfield.Mary was born on March 6, 1931, in Odin, Illinois to Ralph B. Richardson and Bertha C. Berndt.Her parents and older sister, Shirley, soon moved to Newton, Kansas, where her father had been transferred with the railroad. While there, they lived and worked on a farm, growing feed corn and raising hogs. Mary had her own pet hog, Eloise.During her junior year in high school, her father was transferred again, this time to Eugene, Oregon. She attended Eugene High School and graduated in 1947. Mary then received a business certification and worked for Stan Jacobs Insurance for several years. She went on to work for Pacific First Federal Savings Bank in Springfield as a loan officer for years before retiring.She married Boyd Beelman in 1954 and had her daughter, Kathi Lyn Beelman, in 1955. She married Hallie Markham on April 3, 1958, in Springfield.While they were married, Mary and Hal traveled extensively, including a trip aboard the famed Orient Express and a yearlong stay in Mexico.Mary enjoyed baking delicious pies and cookies, going out to lunch with friends, keeping her mind sharp with crossword puzzles, and studying the Bible. She had a beautiful spirit, many friends and was loved by all who knew her. We will all remember her beautiful smile and generous heart.Mary is survived by her granddaughter, Anna Marum, of Portland; her nephew, Timothy Lease, of Redwood City, California; and David Lease, of Newbury Park, California, as well as several nieces nephews.
