Gwin Chalmers Scott Obituary

May 08, 1939 - Jan 21, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Gwin Chalmers Scott, IIMemphis, TNEarly, on the morning of Friday, April 21, 2017, Gwin Chalmers Scott, II, took his last breath. Gone with it is his contagious belly laugh at his own joke with his head thrown back; his last quiet squeeze that tells you how much he loves you; the last time his family will get to tell them how much they love him. He would have been married 53 years in June and would have been 78 in two weeks, but he wouldn't have done anything differently. He would have continued to wake up today, next to his wife; walk his dog, Panga; go to Walgreens; write down a new joke he discovered; tell the same old joke and still elicit a laugh…for he was loved, by everyone who knew him and those he'd only just met. At 4:00 today, he would be at the University Club, where he would have a steam then sip his notoriously-beloved Keystone Light with friends, then return home to another day well-lived – understated and happy - always your biggest fan, and you're always his. Gwin was born on May 8, 1939, in Memphis, TN, where he attended Snowden Elementary and from there boarding school at CMA in Columbia, TN. He graduated from Ole Miss, where he met his life's partner and love, Eleanor Wynn Skipper. They were wed on June 13, 1964. They are long-time members of Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Memphis. Gwin was also a cherished member of the SAE fraternity and loyal Ole Miss Rebels' fan. Gwin and Wynn were inseparable, and he is the treasured patriarch of a widely admired family. He is pre-deceased by his father, John Gwin Scott, mother, Louisa Warfield Scott, sister, Louisa Scott Bender, and grandchildren, Elenna Thisbe Scott and Noah Alexander Scott. He is survived by their four children: Gwin (Lara), Lacey (Ned), John Skipper (Laurian) and Rhodes (Betsy), as well as 11 grandchildren: Aslan, Gwin, Tucker, Edward, Coker, Rhodes, Annie, Chalmers, Lawson, Ovid and Hattie. The visitation will be held at Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 11:30 on Tuesday, April 25, with service to follow at 1:00. Burial to follow at Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thisbe and Noah Scott Foundation, P.O. Box 50332, Nashville, TN 37205-0332, www.thisbeandnoah.org or to Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 246 S. Belvedere Blvd., Memphis, TN 38104.
