Glenda Alvenia Winegard Hood COLUMBIA Glenda Alvenia Winegard Hood, age 81, of Columbia, SC, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2016. She was born on December 17, 1934 in Sumter, SC to the late Raymond and Ruby Winegard. Alvenia graduated from Edmonds High School in Sumter, SC in 1953 where she played the flute and the drums in the marching band. She also played the piano and enjoyed accompanying her brothers while they sang. After high school Alvenia went to work in civil service at Shaw Air Force Base until her marriage on June 18, 1954 to Lt. Stanley V. Hood, the love of her life. After a honeymoon in Gatlinburg, TN, Stan and Alvenia briefly moved to George Air Force Base in CA where they started their family. Alvenia later attended the University of South Carolina. After raising her family Alvenia worked for North Trenholm Presbyterian Church and Capital View Baptist Church where she led an effort to begin their first vacation bible school which attracted over 500 children who were able to hear the news of Jesus Christ. She later began their first pre-school. Alvenia became a managing partner of The Bridal Boutique from 1978 to 1988, eventually opening a second store in Sumter, SC. She was an active member in the community serving as president of the parent/teacher organization for Hammond Academy and as Chairwoman of the Gregg Park Architectural Committee. She was a long-time member of Shandon Baptist Church where she and her husband Stan, served faithfully. Alvenia's talents in art and interior decorating grew with each year. She was an accomplished seamstress and she loved the beach and enjoyed spending time at their condo in Myrtle Beach. Family and friends were Alvenia's passion and delight. She loved to host and entertain and frequently had dinner parties, bridge club, and family reunions at her house. After retirement, Alvenia and Stan traveled in the United States and throughout Western Europe and took several cross Atlantic cruises with stops in South America, Africa, Spain, France and Italy. They enjoyed traveling with long-time friends, Joyce and Bill Raine who were neighbors in CA during their first years of marriage and also the parents of their son in law, Michael Raine. Alvenia was preceded in death by her mother and father and her brothers, Ronnie Joseph Winegard and Raymond Milton Winegard. Alvenia is survived by her husband, General Stanley Vincent Hood Sr.; her three children, Colonel Stanley Vincent Hood, Jr. (Karen), Samuel Mark Hood (Susan), all of Columbia, and Ruby Elizabeth Hood Raine (Michael) of Little Rock, AR; eight grandchildren, Rachel Hood, Laura Hood, Katie Hood, Austin Hood, all of Columbia, Leigh Hood Ladd (Gray) of Woodbridge, Virginia, Joshua Raine (Jennifer) of Watauga, Texas, Jacob Raine (Emily) of Little Rock, AR, and Rebekah Kuhn (Logan) of Memphis, TN; two great-grandchildren, Angesom Ladd and Elsie Ladd of Woodbridge, VA; two sisters-in-law, Cherry Winegard of Columbia and Betty Winegard of Greenville; and many cousins, nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. A memorial service will be held at Shandon Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 3:00 PM followed by visitation. There will be a private family burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
