Glen Mitchell Jr.,Glen Mitchell Jr., 90, walked through Heaven's gates on December 12, 2014. Glen was born on June 14, 1924, in Inavale, Nebraska to Glen and Daisy Mitchell. In 1936, the Mitchell family moved to Wenatchee Washington, and later to Ellensburg. Glen graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1942, and was drafted into the U. S. Army and served until 1945. Glen served as a combat medic for General George Patton's Third Army, 87th "Golden Acorn" Infantry Division. He entered France in November of 1944, and survived many battles to include the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Mountains. Glen also participated in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. Glen received various military commendations to include the bronze star. Upon discharge in 1945, Glen returned to Ellensburg and married Joanne Corum in 1947. Glen worked for the U.S. Post Office for 34 years, mostly delivering mail by walking in the downtown and residential areas of Ellensburg. Glen retired in 1980, however continued his daily routine of walking eleven miles a day. He was fondly referred to as "the walking man". He enjoyed walking and completed many long distance hikes from Ellensburg to Wenatchee as well as hiking the Grand Canyon. He also worked as a janitor at Wells Fargo bank and delivered newspapers.Glen was past President of the VFW, Post 683 in Ellensburg. He was also a member of the Golden Acorn Division Association. Glen was a long time member of the Chestnut Street Baptist Church and volunteered on many missions for the church. Glen and Joanne resided in Ellensburg for 70 years, moving to Yakima in 2010. Glen is survived by his three children, Nancy Brulotte of Zillah, Dean of Moses Lake and Patricia Brown of Ferndale, seven grandchildren, Jennifer Caraway, Kyle Mitchell, Joel Mitchell, Ashley Mitchell, Sarah Mitchell, Linde Brown and Haley Brown; four great grandchildren and sister, Marcella Brown of Richland. He was preceded in death by his wife Joanne, his parents, brothers Archie, Harold, Vernon and Leonard, and sister Isabelle Sanders. Glen loved his country, his community and his family. He was also a committed Christian who faithfully served Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2014 at 10:00 AM, at the Mercer Creek Church, located at 1407 North B Street, in Ellensburg.
