Gerald Arden Peabody, Jr.Mercer Island, WashingtonApril 28, 1932 ~ December 10, 2016Gerald Arden Peabody Jr., age 84,passed away on December 10, 2016. Gerald (Jerry) was born on April 28, 1932 in Bremerton, Washington to Gerald Sr. and Vita Jean Peabody. Jerry grew up in many wonderful places all around the globe. At 4 years old his family moved to Guam where he enjoyed the freedom to ride his horse all over the island exploring nature and finding new fishing holes that sparked a life long love of fishing and the outdoors. In 1941, Jerry was 9 years old, when the family took the last boat from Guam back to the mainland just before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and then Guam. His next home was on the shores of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. There were cherrystone clams on the beach, a dock, a rowboat and his best friend Fragrant Girl - his horse, all of his favorites. In 1944, at age 12, Jerry's family moved back to the Northwest and settled on Bainbridge Island. Jerry was a regular on the Kalakala ferry, traveling back and forth each day to attend the Lakeside School in Seattle. In September of 1947, in 10th grade, Jerry headed to Indiana to attend Culver Military Academy. He graduated from Culver in 1950. Excited to get back to the Northwest, Jerry enrolled at the University of Washington and pledged the Sigma Chi fraternity. Jerry was drafted into the Army in 1953 where he quickly achieved many successes and quickly moved up the ranks to officer's school with the Corps of Engineers. As an Engineer Jerry was given the honor to attend flight school and became an accomplished fixed wing and helicopter pilot. He was discharged from the Army in 1957. On the GI bill Jerry enrolled back at the University of Washington and finished with a Civil Engineer degree. Jerry's first job was with Standard oil. 1967 he went to work for the Boeing Company. In 1971 he went to work with King County Metro, all the while still in the army reserves commanding a helicopter unit at Sand Point Naval Station in Seattle. Jerry settled into his life in Seattle marrying Jane Osterhout and building a house above Lake Washington in the north end and raising two daughters, Victoria and Mary Jane.Continue reading the rest of the story and information about the services at www.sunsethillsfuneralhome.com ` Click on Jerry's name on the front page.
