Gene R. WhiteMemphis, tnGene R. White, 93, of Memphis, TN, passed away October 30th, 2017, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Gene was born on August 18, 1924, in Clovis, New Mexico, to Earnest (E. A.) and Mary White. He lived in Roswell and Hagerman, New Mexico, through high school, homesteading a sheep ranch and farm with his father and uncles during the summer.Gene graduated from Hagerman High School and joined the Navy in 1943, serving for three years. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for Panhandle Power and Light in Lubbock, Texas. Gene met Nell Adair in Lubbock, and they married on July 30, 1954. In 1957, Gene went to work for IBM in Owego, New York. After a few more cross-country moves, he settled his family in Longmont, Colorado, where he worked for IBM until he retired in 1985. Gene and Nell celebrated their fiftieth anniversary together in 2004. Nell died March 13, 2005, and in 2007, Gene moved to Memphis to be near his daughter and her family.A man of faith, Gene served as an elder and taught Junior High Sunday School for many years. He was involved on the missions board wherever he served. He loved spending time with his family, with whom he camped, hiked, and took yearly road trip adventures through nearly all the states and Canada. Never an idle man, he always had a tool or book in hand, enjoying history, geography, and gardening.Gene dearly loved his family. He was a devoted husband and an amazing father. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, E.A. Jr, and Bruce White. He is survived by his daughter, Marinell White Throckmorton (Albert) of Memphis, and her two sons, Graham and Philip; his son David White (Valerie Grant) of Boulder, Colorado, and his step-daughters Bailey and Claire Nelson-Grant.The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, November 4, in the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church with a reception following.His ashes will be interred next to his beloved wife in Longmont, Colorado.In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the missions ministry of Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tennessee.
