Gene G. Shukin August 18, 1929 - January 6, 2017 Gene G. Shukin passed away peacefully on January 6, 2017 at St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon SK. Gene was born on her Grandmother's farm north of Stenen SK on August 18, 1929. Gene was preceded in death by her father Elex Yaremko, mother Mary Yaremko (nee Kmet), brother John Yaremko, sister Tillie Maddess, brother Boris Yaremko, son Wayne Shukin, and former husband Alex N. Shukin. Gene's life is celebrated by her sisters Mary Auramenko and Rose Drebit; brother Mike Yaremko (Sylvia); daughters Karen Semchuk, Barbara Baker (Rick), Debora Russell, and Shelley Sanders (Ed); her sons Brian and Darcy Shukin; her grandchildren [Ryshanna Bellisle (Achilles); Cassandra Neufeld (Sheldon); Anastasia Hendrickx; Angie Shaw (Adam); Alyssan Gauthier (Kyler); Katie Hesje (Dan); Sandy Shukin; Tyler Russell (Miranda Unrau); Gabrielle, Nikita, and Mikiel Shukin]; and Great Grandchildren Austin Shanks; Isaac and Carter Shaw; Brooklyn and Justin Bellisle; Brody Shukin; Brook and Ivy Russell; and Shelby and Paxton Neufeld. Gene was a modern woman of her time, being one of the first women to have a career and drive. Her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse was important and rewarding for her. She has been described by former patients and colleagues as a competent, compassionate, and caring nurse. Her family was her top priority. She was a warm and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who cherished her family above all else. She could be counted on to provide encouragement and support in times of need and to celebrate accomplishments and milestones in times of joy. Gene was an active member of St. Martin's United Church and especially enjoyed singing in the choir. She was an accomplished bowler and loved to dance, curl, and ice skate with her family. She was an avid gardener, a wonderful cook, and made a "mean perogie," as with other Ukrainian cuisine. Gene was a remarkable woman. A memorial service will be held at a late date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stoke Foundation.
