Gary SmithApril 4, 1949 - May 22, 2015ObituaryGary Lee Smith, 66April 4, 1949 - May 22, 2015Gary Lee Smith, R.N. of Pocatello, Id. died unexpectedly on May 22, 2015 while on vacation with family in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He was 66 years old. His family was at his side.Gary is survived by his wife of 44 years, Vicki; his children, daughter Stacey Smith Tetherow of Snohomish, Wa. son Ryan Smith of Pocatello, Id.; and his two grandsons, Dylan and Karson Shelton of Snohomish, Wa. He is preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Evelyn and John Magan of Pocatello, Id., and his father Vernon Smith of Michigan.Gary was born on April 4, 1949 in Los Angeles, Ca. to Vernon and Evelyn Smith. They divorced and Evelyn later met and married Verdis W. (John) Magan and they moved with her son, Gary to Pocatello, Id. Gary attended Pocatello schools and graduated from Highland High School in 1967, and Idaho State University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He met his wife, Vicki Lott of Blackfoot, Id. while they were both attending ISU. They married in 1971 and moved to Great Falls, Mt. where Gary was stationed in the US Air Force as a Medic at Malmstrom Air Force Base. After his Military service, the family, Gary, Vicki and Stacey returned to Pocatello where Gary finished school and began his career as an RN, paving the way for other Male Nurses, and welcomed his son Ryan to the family. Gary's nursing career included, St. Anthony Hospital, Pocatello Regional Medical Center (IHC), retired, Bannock Regional Medical Center, and Portneuf Medical Center, retired in 2014. His entire career was in the medical field, including Med Alert Ambulance, Pocatello and even a stint as the Plant Nurse at FMC, Pocatello. He worked in the Emergency Room, managed the Home Health Dept. at PRMC, Outpatient Surgery and retired from the Recovery Room. Gary cared about his patients and his co-workers. The words caring, compassionate and kind are always used to describe Gary. Gary's children remember him teaching them that compassion, hard work and dedication are the skills that would help them in their careers. He was a patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.In addition to his career, Gary enjoyed being with his family and friends. Traveling was his favorite pastime, and often included cruising, trips to Disneyland, frequent trips to Washington, Montana and Nevada. Fishing, boating and eating out were among his hobbies.Per Gary's wishes, he was cremated in Reno, Nevada and no public services will be held. The family would like to thank the staff of Sierra ICU at Renown Medical Center, Reno, Nv., and Ross Burke & Knoble Mortuary for their care and compassion for Gary and the family.
