Fred lived next door to Badger coach Milt Bruhn and his wife Helen in Madison for 18 years. Fred also loved golf and never missed the PGA tour. He played until he was unable to and worked part-time after retirement at Studebaker Golf Course where he really enjoyed sharing his love of golf with the local children. Fred was also a big fan of all of his grandchildren's sports. He followed them all and attended as many games as he could. He was always seen in the stands at local basketball courts, Chet Waggoner Little League, Pop Warner and Washington High School football games and wrestling matches.
