Fredrick "Fred" A. Shirkey, age 81, of Oscoda passed away on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 at Tendercare Nursing Home in Tawas City.He was born on Oct. 10, 1934 in Flint to the late Lemuel and Hazel Shirkey. Fred moved to Oscoda as a young adult with his mother. He was very involved in "The Center" and enjoyed excursions and arts and crafts. Fred was a sports enthusiast and loved following the Detroit Tigers. He won many medals in the Special Olympics and especially enjoyed bowling and fishing. For many years, Fred was proud to deliver the Northeastern Shopper to local area businesses. He was known for his outgoing personality and was loved by many. Fred is survived by his brother-in-law, Richard Leach; special nieces, Bonnie Leach and Janice Shirkey; and many great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Leach and Elnor Feriend; and brother, Ronald Shirkey. Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 6 p.m. at Buresh Funeral Home in Oscoda.
