Francis "Fran" Eugene Polen76, Kentland, Indiana, passed peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 28, 2017. Fran was born on May 21, 1940 to John and Dorothy Polen. He graduated from A.J. Kent High School in 1958. He was married to Lois Altman of Kentland on July 9, 1966. She survives.A lifelong resident of Kentland, Fran was a part of his family farming operation, an aspect of Fran's life in which he found great pride especially his opportunity to farm alongside his father, John, his son, Jason, and his grandchildren. Fran's farming career spanned his lifetime and included corn and soybean production as well as raising 4-H pigs.In addition to farming, Fran had a long career with the United States Postal Service. His work with the U.S. Post Office began in 1969 as a substitute rural carrier. Fran served as Postmaster in many communities including Boswell, Oxford, and Veedersburg, Indiana. He retired as Postmaster from Rensselaer, Indiana in 2001 to be able to spend more time with his grandchildren. Fran served in several leadership roles in the National League of Postmasters - Indiana Branch including State President, State Vice President and State Executive Vice President. Fran was a strong mentor to his fellow postal workers and worked hard to ensure married postal workers were assigned to offices in close vicinities. Fran was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club,
Elks Club, and the Antique Tractor Barn at the Newton County Fair. Fran was a proud member of Cluster's Incorporated. In addition to his many memberships, Fran enjoyed bowling, restoring antique tractors, and watching his grandchildren's many activities including playing sports, 4-H tractor driving and showing pigs and goats at the fair. Fran was very proud to have visited 45 states with the love of his life, Lois.Surviving with his wife, Lois, are their four children: Jayne Polen, Kentland; Jason Polen (Pamela), Kentland; Julie Polen-Hollingsworth, Kentland; Joyce Polen, Kentland. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Ethan, Wyatt, and Jessica Polen; Ashley Montoya (Jorge); Tyler Hollingsworth (Heather); Garett Hollingsworth; and four great grandchildren: Taliyah and A.J. Montoya; Halison and Lelan Hollingsworth.Preceding Fran in death were his parents, John and Dorothy, his brother, John, and sisters Patricia Clinton, Phyllis Ferrell and Mary Laffoon.Rosary Service will begin at 4:00 p.m. CST on Friday, February 3, 2017 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kentland, Indiana. Visitation will follow until 8:00 p.m. CST. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. CST at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kentland, Indiana.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Aubrey's Angels Foundation.Share memories and condolences online at
