Florence Anne HAYES Obituary

Nov 09, 1917 - Mar 11, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Florence Anne Hayes (Stanek)November 9, 1917 – February 21, 2017Florence Hayes passed away peacefully on February 21, 2017 at Oliver Lodge at the age of 99 years. Florence was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Annie Stanek; her husband, Walter Hayes (1978), and her special friend David Bonner (2006); her sisters, Gladys Kemp (Malcolm), Ruby Arsenault (Pete); her brothers, Norman Stanek and Ron Stanek. She is survived by her sister, Adeline Smith (Jerry); and her sisters-in-law, Mildred Stanek and Donna Stanek. She will be remembered by her children; sons, Terry (Karen) Hayes, Dwane (Donna) Hayes, Brent (Barbara) Hayes; daughters, Heather (Ron) Lenius and Brenda (Ray) Prefontaine; as well as 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Florence was born on November 9, 1917 near Biggar on the original homestead that her parents acquired after they arrived in Canada from North Dakota; she was the second of six children born to Frank and Annie (Pich) Stanek. In 1923 the family moved south to the present day Stanek farm in the Camberley district. She attended Camberley School and started training in Saskatoon as a hairdresser, however she was called back home due to the premature death of her mother followed by a devastating fire that destroyed the family home two weeks later. Growing up in the 'depression years' and the harshness of this time would shape her character and make her the person she became. Following the example of her parents, she helped to carry the family through these years with sacrifice, incredible strength, courage and quiet dignity. She married Walter Hayes on October 31, 1942. They lived briefly in the communities of Valley Centre and Marriott before moving to Sovereign in 1949, where Flo helped her dad run the butcher shop. In 1959 the family moved into the telephone office, and she became the new telephone operator. When the telephone office closed in 1971, the family moved to Saskatoon where Florence became an information operator with SaskTel. She received her well deserved retirement in 1982. She will be remembered for her deep devotion and dedication to family and friends, her caring and compassion for others, her many acts of kindness, her fun and loving nature and her warm smile. She had a deep faith and accepted life with its many hardships and blessings. Her family is very grateful to the staff at Oliver Lodge for the wonderful care she received while she was a resident there. Her struggle with dementia is over and she is now at peace. A Service of Remembrance will be held in Rosetown later this spring. Arrangements in care of MARTENS WARMAN FUNERAL HOME (306-934-4888).
