Faye Jaline FaulknerSanta Paula, CAFaye Jaline Faulkner, age 95, passed away on October 13, 2017 with her daughter, Kathy by her bedside. She was born on November 8, 1921, in a country doctor's office in the town of Dawson, Texas, located about 30 miles north of Waco, Texas. Her parents were tenant farmers where the primary crop was cotton. Her home was usually one provided by the farm owner and she often shared that some of the houses she lived in had holes in the wall large enough to "throw a cat through." She was a depression baby and most of the children of the farmers would quit school when they were 14 to 16 years old and begin to work in the fields. Faye's mother valued education and insured her children went to school first and worked to help the family after attending school. She made her Mother proud when Faye completed high school and was the valedictorian of her graduating class. Faye had a dream as well. She wanted to become a nurse. During her senior year in high school, she lived with and took care of the mother of the Alfred Floyd, the owner of the large farm they lived on. She quickly became like a member of their family and they wanted to help her achieve her goal. One of Mrs. Floyd's sons lived in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was invited to go to Corpus Christi to visit them and look into attending the Fred Roberts Memorial Hospital nursing program. She found out that the country school she attended was not accredited and she had to pass academic tests to verify her ability to perform high school level work. This was an easy challenge to accomplish. The more difficult challenge was taking college courses to obtain the science, chemistry and anatomy she needed for entrance into nurses training. The Floyd family introduced her to Dr. Margaret Frank, who hired Faye as a nanny for the 2 years it took to get her science courses completed. Her hard work and commitment to her goal was recognized when Dr. Frank's ladies' club granted Faye a full scholarship to nurses training. Not only did she complete her nurses training in 1946, but also she met her partner for life, Robert Faulkner. He was a young Naval airman crewing the PBY's that flew during World War II. They were married on June 9, 1946, in a country church outside of Dawson, Texas, on a Sunday morning after church was over. They celebrated their 71st Wedding anniversary on June 9th, just before Bob passed away on June 25, 2017. She missed him every day and now they are together walking around heaven hand in hand. Faye was a stay at home Mom until around 1959 when she went to work for the Santa Paula maternity hospital located on Harvard at Fourth Street. She was a part of the team that opened the Santa Paula Community Hospital in 1961. She predominantly worked the maternity ward. Faye said she knew it was time to retire when the babies she had delivered were starting to come in having their own babies. Faye was a member of Santa Paula First Southern Baptist church since 1956, now merged with Lifeway Baptist Church. Her church family and the activities of her church were a major part of her life. She taught Sunday School for many years, both youth and adult, vacation bible school, camp nurse and President of the Women's Missionary Union. Faye is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Faulkner. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Kemp, and "granddog" Crosby. A special thank you to the caregivers Gail Diamond, Kelly Gomez and Rudy Jimenez. You took care of Faye and Bob as if they were your own family. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula Street, Santa Paula, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the Lifeway Baptist Church, 673 West Santa Paula Street, Santa Paula, on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Following the service, a luncheon for family and friends will be held in the church fellowship hall and provide a time to share memories. Following the fellowship time, a graveside service will be held at 1:45 p.m. at the Conejo Memorial Park, 2015 Howard Road, Camarillo. Faye will be laid to rest with her sweetheart and life partner, Robert. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Santa Clara Valley Hospice.
