Evelyn "Poochie" Thornton Reavis Evelyn "Poochie" Thornton Reavis, of Hilton Head Island, SC died in her home, surrounded by her loving husband and son on June 1, 2016. She was 70 years old. Evelyn is survived by her husband Gary Eugene Reavis of Hilton Head Island; son, Philip Graham and Jancy Thorne Reavis of Roswell, GA; grandchildren Katherine Dale Reavis and Duncan Philip Reavis of Roswell, GA; sisters Mary Thornton and Dr. Roger Sawyer of Columbia, SC and Laura Thornton Puterbaugh of Sunnyvale, CA; and many other loving family members. She is preceded in death by her parents, Atticus Granville Thornton and Laura Duncan Thornton Hofsess; and her sister, Sandra Thornton Watts. Evelyn was born on May 11, 1946 in Spartanburg, SC. She graduated from West Mecklenberg High School in Charlotte, NC where she met Gary, her husband of over 50 years. She graduated from Columbia College and received her Masters in Education from Cambridge College. In 1971, they moved from Columbia, SC to Hilton Head Island where they have lived for 45 years. Evelyn taught Special Education at Michael C. Riley Elementary in Bluffton for 4 years and at Hilton Head Elementary for 31 years before retiring in 2006. In 1998 she was recognized as "Teacher of the Year" at Hilton Head Elementary School. A lover of animals and an avid fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks, Poochie loved to travel and shop with family and friends. Her home, which she referred to as Camp Narragansett, was always open for fun and family celebrations. Whether hanging out at the beach or watching their various dance and sports activities, Poochie also loved spending time with her grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled at The Island Funeral Home, 4 Cardinal Road, Hilton Head Island, SC on Saturday June 18, 2016. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00-3:00 PM and a memorial service will be at 3:00 PM. The family will welcome all friends to our home immediately afterwards to continue to celebrate Evelyn's life.
