This obituary is administered by:
Shilka, Evelyn B.Evelyn "Nana" Shilka of Stevens Point passed away peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2016, after a short illness. Her 92 years gave her and others much joy and allowed her to see many historic events, including the Great Depression and World War II. She was a strong woman, loving mother, and a fantastic grandmother. Her love of life was evident in how she lived... on her own terms. She sang many different songs and nursery rhymes and had the best sayings. Polkas made her happy. Evelyn was born on October 5, 1924, to the late Mary (Zakoski) and Joseph Kitowski. She married Peter P. Shilka on October 28, 1944. He preceded her in death on February 13, 1989. Peter and Evelyn took over the family farm, which they operated until 1967. In addition, Evelyn worked at Skalski Supply Company and then Sentry Insurance until 1989. She was a hard worker.Evelyn was a self-proclaimed "TomBoy" and loved spending time outdoors. She often told stories of following her Pa everywhere she could when she was growing up. Gardening, fishing, and hunting were some of her favorite activities. Visiting and cooking for people gave her great joy. Pierogies, paczki, and chicken dumpling soup were among her best recipes, and she prepared at least three types of meat for most meals. For many years, she had three gardens filled with corn, potatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and raspberries. So many delicious sundaes were made with those berries. Evelyn also was an avid hunter. If there was a season for it, she wanted to shoot it. Evelyn had a good shot and was successful for many deer seasons. Her three grandchildren loved every adventure with their Nana. She went swimming with them when they went camping and played silly games. They were taken on many walks in the woods to find mushrooms and black berries as well as looking for the best spots to dig for worms. With those worms, Nana taught them how to fish, and she was sure to catch the most since she liked to use three poles!Evelyn was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary every night. She was active in her church and was very proud to be a member of the choir. She is survived by her son, James (Marie) Shilka of DePere, WI; her grandchildren: Sandy (Mark) Verhasselt, Eric (Oscar Espinoza) Shilka, and Jenny (Ken Murphy) Shilka-Schuh; great-grandchildren: Stephanie, Kyle, Ashley, and Adam Verhasselt; and Mekaila, Alaina, and Isley Schuh along with their father, Roger Schuh. She is further survived by sisters-in-law MaryAnn (Ray) Zimmerman of Mosinee and Elaine Pascavis of Florida as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Alice Brostowitz and Florence Dahlman. It took a village to keep Evelyn in her beloved home until August 31, 2016. Her daughter-in-law, Marie, was truly Evelyn's angel on earth in her later years. Thank you to Mike (Ceil) Sobczak and their son, Chris, for visiting her regularly and doing extras around her farm, including grass mowing and snow removal. Thank you also to Georgia, Beth, Jackie, and Jennifer. These ladies were great caregivers and kept her participating in social activities as well. She enjoyed many hours at the senior centers in Plover and Stevens Point. Our gratitude to Century Oaks Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion to Evelyn and our family.
