Eric Smith (Sleepy) was born April 15, 1949 to William Clinton and Ceola Smith in Chicago, IL. He accepted Christ at an early age. He joined and was baptized at South Park Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. E.R. Williams Sr., and later he joined Mt. Eagle Baptist Church under the leadership of Elder Osmund L. Hooks. Eric attended and served faithfully until his health prevented him from doing so and God called him home. Eric sang in the men's choir and he loved sharing God's word through "Our Daily Bread."
Eric attended Doolittle Grammar School and graduated from Wendell Phillipd High School. He worked at several jobs before his longevity at IITRI for 28 years. There he met his wife Gloria and they shared 41 years together.
Eric served in the United States Army in Vietnam. He received several medals and an honorable discharge.
Eric's parents, William and Ceola, proceeded him in death, in addition his sister Madeline and his brother Wiliam, Jr.
As most people can attest to, Eric was a sharp dresser and he enjoyed bopping music and singing. He especially loved the Temptations. Eric also enjoyed fishing, reading, and buying and collecting electronics even though he didn't use them. He was always known for having a toothpick either in his mouth or in his pocket.
Eric leaves precious memories with his wife Gloria, his children Erica "Baby Girl," Chon(Ed), LaTonya and Eric, Jr.( Charlene), grandchildren, Jaydin, Lametrice, Dewayne and Fabian, a sister Juanita, sister-in-laws, Stephanie(Charles), Charlene, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
