Dr. Emmett Franklin Shockley passed away Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Tres Hermanas in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was 90 years old. He enjoyed golf, hiking, camping, electrical work and lock-smithing. Dr. Shockley was born on July 8, 1926 in Carnegie, Oklahoma. He spent his childhood in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he was active in school, church, and became an Eagle Scout. He enlisted in the Navy, serving on Guam during
World War II, then in the Philippines during the
Korean conflict. He married the love of his life, Doris Lard, in 1949, after attending University of Missouri as a journalism major. He then began a career in teaching. He received his Masters degree from New Mexico State University, and later a PhD from University of New Mexico. Dr. Shockley became Superintendent of the Public Schools of Deming, New Mexico in 1965, where he served for 17 years before his retirement.Dr. Shockley was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 2009 after almost 60 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Karen Shockley MD, and Melanie Shockley RPh, as well as grandchildren Lauren Kanyuck and Harrison Shockley. He is also survived by his sister, MaryAnn Duerksen. Viewing will be held at Baca's Funeral Chapel in Deming on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from 4 to 7pm. Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church in Deming on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 10am, followed by a short graveside service.Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
