This obituary is administered by:
Elsie Mae Smith Osburn1932-2016Elsie Mae Smith Osburn, 84, passed away on November 11, 2016 in Boise, ID after a short illness. She was born on April 30, 1932 to Lloyd D. "Bill" Smith and Mary Amelia Barigar Smith in Oakley, ID. She spent her childhood and youth growing up among extended family and friends in the Oakley area, graduating from Oakley High School in 1950. After graduation she was the receptionist for Dr. J.R. Kircher in Burley, ID. Elsie met Larry L. Osburn, who worked for Idaho Power Company, and they married on August 17, 1956. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The young couple lived in Boise, ID where Elsie worked in the steno pool at the Department of Law Enforcement. She enjoyed singing with the Choralectrics, a choir sponsored by Idaho Power. Larry & Elsie were blessed with four children. Besides raising her children, she liked to keep busy with family camping trips, traveling to visit relatives, crafts, genealogy, Mothers of Twins Club, TOPS club, cheering for various BSU sports teams, and for over 25 years she taught water aerobics for Active Older Adults at the Downtown YMCA.Elsie was the number one fan and cheerleader of her children in their various activities and sports accomplishments. If there was a band competition, track meet or football game that one of the Osburn kids were participating in, you knew for sure that Larry and Elsie were in the stands, the sheer volume of her shouts keeping them going sometimes! After all of the kids were in school, Elsie went to work part-time for the Safeway Foods regional office as a secretary.Elsie was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her beautiful soprano voice could be heard in ward and stake choirs until various illnesses prevented her from participating in recent years. She held many ward and stake positions such as Primary and Relief Society secretary and was a teacher in many organizations. She loved attending the temple.Elsie and Larry traveled to many fun and exotic places. They took a cruise to Alaska and the Caribbean. They toured the Hawaiian Islands several times and also visited Australia. One of their favorite trips was to Germany with daughter Karen to visit daughter Karma and her husband Larry, who were stationed there with the Air Force. One of Elsie's most cherished occasions was when she was chosen to be a torch bearer for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Flame as it passed through Boise. She was shocked to be nominated and amazed to be selected to run/walk the torch. She savored every moment of the experience and made personal appearances for well over a year afterward, sharing her beautiful torch with many appreciative audiences. Her torch has a prominent spot in the living room and the official track suit is still in her closet!Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Oril Kirkham, a brother "D" who died in infancy, and a grandson Randal Martin Howard. She is survived by her husband Larry and daughter Ronda of Boise, ID, daughter Karen Howard (Marty) of Meridian, ID, daughter Karma Kauffman (Larry) of Enumclaw, WA, and son Kelly (Lolly) of Brigham City, UT. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren (Jeremy, Andrea, Daniel, Mandan, Ben, AJ, Hayley, Zachary and Coleman) and 6 great grandchildren (Talon, Desmond, Lucas, Evelyn, Gracie and Boston).Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 18th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel at 3020 Cherry Ln. in Boise, ID.
