RACINE - Elmo N. Halverson, 93, passed away at the Elizabeth Residence on January 25, 2015. Elmo was born on July 7, 1921 in the Township of Ashippun, WI to Obert and Georgia (nee Bratz) Halverson. He attended a one room school house until high school where he graduated from Hartford High School. Moving to Racine prior to WWII, he began training for a career in the field of aviation in 1938. With the advent of war, he joined the US Army Air Corps Reserve in 1942. Elmo served as a Flight Instructor in the War Training Service until transferring to the US Army Air Transport Command (ATC). In the ATC he served flying troops and cargo in the United States, North Africa, the Middle East, and India. He served with honor until 1960 when he resigned from the Air Force Reserve as a Captain. After WWII, in 1946, he started the flight operations for J.I. Case Company in Racine. In 1959 he moved across the airport to the Johnson Wax flight operations until he retired as Aviation Manager in 1985. He continued to fly as a part-time pilot until 1990. On May 1, 1947, Elmo married Marian Frank in Racine, Wisconsin. They raised their three children in Racine. Elmo and Marian traveled extensively throughout the world, especially during retirement. Together they built and reconstructed a century-old log house on Legend Lake in Keshena, Wisconsin. They enjoyed many days together throughout the years in their cabin. Elmo is survived by his loving wife, Marian; two children, daughter - Carla (Tom) Nelson of Denver CO, and son - Loren (Mary) Halverson of Anchorage, AK; grandchildren, Laura Halverson of Anchorage, AK, Ben Halverson of Seattle, WA, Andrew Halverson of Seattle, WA, Katie (Keegan) Feeney of Durango, CO, Tobin (Adasha) Nelson of Denver, CO, Tyler Nelson of Durango, CO and Kayla Halverson (daughter of Craig) of Ames, IA; one great-grandchild, Gage Dufour of Anchorage, AK; and a step great-grandchild, Gulzhan Julmagambetova of Denver, CO. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Alois William Martin, and his loving son, Craig. Funeral service in honor of Elmo will be held at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 212 11th Street, on Saturday morning, January 31, 2015 at 1030 AM with Rev. John Fleming officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery with full military honors. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church from 930 AM until service time.
