Schmidt, Elmer F.Elmer F Schmidt, 93, a former Deputy Chief with the Bridgeport Fire Department passed away on Monday, October 10 in Round Rock, Texas. Chief Schmidt was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and a dedicated public servant to the people of Bridgeport, Connecticut for 42 years. He was born on June 27, 1923, attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Central High School. He was drafted and served overseas in the US Army in World War II in the 101st Airborne and 82 Airborne, glider division. He served in Europe for months having witnessed firsthand the Battle of the Bulge. By the grace of God he returned home where he worked for the Bullard Company and shortly after joined the Bridgeport Fire Department. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Platt at the Ritz Ballroom one Saturday evening as the Big Bands played and from that day on they were inseparable. They married and had two children, Mark and Mary. They were to celebrate their 68th anniversary today. Chief Schmidt was an exemplary man. He loved God, his family and his fellow firefighters. Often he could be found at home studying at the kitchen table for his next Civil Service test. He was the biggest fan of the NY Giants and supported them through thick and thin. He was known to watch football all day on Sunday and hockey when football was not on. Once in Texas he came to enjoy college football, especially the Texas Longhorns. Elmer was unselfish in his love for his wife and put her first always. His children were blessed to have had such a loving father. Our memories of him will do much to ease our loss. He was such a wonderful man. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy , his daughter Mary Doyle and her husband Gary, his grandchildren, Matt & Colleen Doyle, all of Round Rock, Texas. He is predeceased by his son, Mark, whom he loved dearly, his mother, father, and brother who will greet him in heaven. Private burial services were held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
