Ellen Elizabeth Hawks Smith, 87, of Salisbury passed away on Sunday, July 23rd, 2017 at Magnolia Gardens in Spencer. She was born on Jan. 6, 1930 in Galax, Va., to the late Tacy Rector Hawks and the late Oscar Anderson Hawks. Ellen graduated from Galax Virginia public schools and then from St. Leo's School of Nursing with a Registered Nursing degree. She was employed at Rowan Memorial Hospital. In addition, she and her late husband owned Matika Villa Mobile Home Park. She loved to cultivate flowers, garden and volunteer, serving as a volunteer for Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice for many years. Ellen was a longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church of Salisbury. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, William Doyle Smith; and brother, Sidney Hawks. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dr. Mary Ann S. Karriker (Tom) of Salisbury, Ms. Tacy Karen Smith of Houston, Tex., Mr. Tim Smith of Salisbury, Mr. Jeff Smith of Houston, Tex.; grandchildren: Dr. Locke A. Karriker, Mrs. Melissa Karriker Powers (Mike), Dr. Margo J. Karriker, Matthew Smith and Mrs. Sarah Smith Lunham (Tom). She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be missed dearly. Service: 11 a.m., Friday, July 28, at Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tom Corbell, the Rev. Clarence Sifford and the Rev. David Vess officiating. Entombment to follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.
