Ellen Eldridge Nord Obituary

May 16, 1945 - Jan 26, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Nord, Ellen Eldridge,Ellen Nord passed away peacefully in her home on October 26, 2017 surrounded by family and free from pain. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles D. and Mary Eldridge, her brother Dr. Jack Eldridge and her husband, Ken Nord.Ellen was born on May 16, 1945 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She lived in Louisville, Kentucky, residing in Audubon Park for most of her childhood. She attended Saint Stephen Martyr, Presentation Academy and - briefly- Spalding College, before marrying her high school sweetheart, Kenny Nord. They had four children and moved around the country until 1978 when they returned to Louisville and Audubon Park and opened The Brown Bag Deli and Pub on Preston Street, which they ran for 30 years. If Ken was the brains of the operation, then Ellen was the heart. Ken and Ellen had many friends: Saint Stephen's parishioners, customers from the restaurant, fellow Saint X and Presentation parents, and U of L and UK football fans. The Nord home and the Brown Bag were gathering places for all of them. They were also blessed to be close to both the Eldridge family and the Nord family and, again, they hosted many celebrations at their home or restaurant. One of the most notable events was their annual Dogwood Festival party, which everyone enjoyed. Ellen was a wonderful hostess, always making sure that her guests were comfortable and had enough to eat. In her late forties, Ellen left the restaurant and returned to school. She was studying to become a teacher when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout her treatment she continued with her studies and taught both at Saint Nicholas Academy and Meredith Dunn School until last year, pausing only to care for Ken until his death in 2005. Meredith Dunn and its mission was her passion and she spoke about her students until her final days. Ellen is survived by her four children, Jody Schaefer (Jeff), Mike Nord (Lynn), Jenny Nord, and Rick Nord (Laura); her beloved grandchildren, Clay, Cassidy, Connor and Carson Schaefer, MaKenna Nord, Maddie, Max, Isaac and Ella Martin and Sophia and Isabella Nord; her sister Ann Hurst (Buddy), her brother Tom Eldridge (Marsha), Jack's wife Anne Eldridge, many nieces and nephews and hundreds and hundreds of friends. Many thanks to her dear friends Kathy Hoben, Cathy Stovall, and her neighbors Pat and Carl Heger. Thanks also to her friends from Pres and "the girls." She was well loved. Her golden retriever, Weezer, was a great comfort to her as well. The funeral service will be Tuesday, October 31 at 10:00 am at Saint Stephen Martyr Church 2931 Pindell Avenue. Visitation will be Monday, October 30 from 2-8 p.m. at Bosse Funeral Home, 1355 Ellison Avenue. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to Meredith Dunn School in Ellen's name. Nothing would make her happier.
