Ellen Cecelia Hudson Trexler, 90, of Salisbury passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 at the Carillon Assisted Living facility surrounded by family. Ellen was born on April 16, 1926 in Rowan County to the late Alexander Shuping Hudson and Elmina Meetze Hudson. A graduate of Women's College (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) with a Master's of Education from UNC-Greensboro and a Master's of both Science and Math from Wake Forest University, she had a flourishing career as a teacher for 32 years within the Rowan County School System. Her last 15 years of teaching were as a Space Science Specialist at Margaret C. Woodson Planetarium. Additionally, she taught Physics and Astronomy at Catawba College and sponsored exchange students throughout her career. Ellen was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Salisbury, where she served as president of both WELCA and Church Women United. Additionally, she was an energetic leader of local and national organizations, including the Harold B. Jarrett Post 342, VFW 3006 and DAR. She served as a den leader for Boy Scouts, where she was presented with the prestigious LAMB award at the end of her volunteer service. She was an avid astronomer who was a founding member of the Astronomical Club of Rowan County. An abbreviated list of Ellen's hobbies included traveling throughout the world, dancing, singing, music, sewing/quilting, gardening, canning, cooking and reading. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lamar Trexler Sr.; and sister, Betty Driscoll Waddell. She is survived by her sister, Minnie Grabowski of Salisbury; children, Cecelia Trexler, Henry and Judy Trexler, Mary and Gary Epperley, Mark and Betty Trexler, and Matt and Kathy Trexler; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren with two due in 2017. Graveside Service: A graveside service will be held 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 at the Old Historic Salisbury National Cemetery, 202 Government Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144. Visitation & Service: The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 in Peeler Hall at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 West Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144. A Celebration of Life will be conducted by Pastor Rhodes Woolly at 11 a.m. following the visitation. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Glenn A.
