Batten, ElizabethElizabeth Ann Batten, 79, resident of De Pere, WI passed away on October 15, 2017. She was born on September 19, 1938, to Gertrude Kostuch and Dale Sherman in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.She attended Waupaca High School. She married Gary Batten on September 27, 1958 in Waupaca, Wisconsin. She was employed by the West De Pere School District at Westwood Elementary School as a teacher's aide for 17 years.She was an avid reader. Bette loved sewing and doing different types of crafts with her friends, kids and grandkids. Bette and Gary loved spending time on the beach in Florida collecting seashells.She created many beautiful things using her shell treasures. Bette was also an awesome cook and baker. She was famous for Bette's buns, crybaby cookies and chip dip. She graduated from Waupaca High School in 1956 as class president and valedictorian. Bette loved to watch the West De Pere Phantoms football team on Friday nights with Gary from their special parking spot.When Bette was 11, she was stricken with polio and spent 1.5 years in a hospital in Ithaca, NY. What she may have lacked in physical stature she made up for with her intellect, grit, and strong personality. Bette was a friend and "mother" to many.She is survived by Gary Batten, her husband of 59 years. Her children David (Marcy) Batten, Vesper, Kathy (Chris) Heller, Wausau, Jack (Pat) Batten, Green Bay, Jenny (Craig) Kloes, Sheboygan and Joel Batten, Madison. She has 11 grandchildren, Krista (Dave) Evans, Kaitlin (David) Heller, Luke Heller, Megan and Claire Batten, Jacob, Emma and Jackson Kloes, Michaela (Shane) Ruesch, Eric Schooley and Ethan (Jamie) Schooley .She has 5 great grandchildren, Emery and Asher Evans, Grady, Bently and Demi Ruesch. Her siblings, Lon(Jan) Sherman, Waupaca, Marilyn (Ken) Multerer, Columbus, OH, Jean(John) Kalcik, Green Bay and Joel Smits, Townsend. Sisters in law, Janie Batten, Jeanette Batten and Bernice Vandensen. Also survived by their best friends, Jim and Patt Brusoe. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jere Sherman, her sister, Lori Smits and daughter-in-law, Tammy Batten. Her in-laws, Melvin and Bertha Batten, brothers in law, Dewey, Benny and Dennis Batten.Family and friends may visit from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere.A short sharing of stories will close the visitation at 12:45 PM.The family would like to extend appreciation to the staff at Rennes Health Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Paul's Pantry or Freedom House of Green Bay.
