Nov 12, 1923 - Jan 08, 2016
This obituary is administered by:
Mann, Elaine O. (Schultz) Died Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Elaine was born on November 12, 1923 in Bushton, KS, to Herbert Carl and Vida Mildred Schultz. She spent her childhood in Bridgewater, Finchford, and Allerton, IA and Bushton, KS. Elaine graduated from Claflin High School in May 1941 as valedictorian. She loved all things related to music, especially piano, and intended to go to college, get a music degree and be a music teacher. All that changed with Pearl Harbor Day December 7, 1941. Elaine attended the Salt City Business College in Hutchinson until February 1942, at which time she went to Washington, D.C. at age 18 to become a secretary for the Army and Navy Munitions Board in the Pentagon. Upon returning to Wichita at the close of World War II, she worked for the Fourth National Bank as an Executive Secretary and later as Assistant Credit Manager. At the bank, she served as Secretary and then Vice President of the local branch of American Institute of Banking and also as Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Women's Credit Association of Wichita. Elaine married her love and best friend, Claude Mann, on April 8, 1957 in Eureka Springs, AR, where they fell in love with the quaint little town and spent time there after retirement. After they were married, Claude started a Wichita aircraft component supplier company, Airtechnics, Inc. During the next several years, Elaine was busy rearing a family, helping with Cub Scouts, serving on PTA Boards at Hyde and Robinson schools, an officer in the Booster Club at East High and helping at Airtechnics during vacations until it became a full-time job. Elaine, with her family, were long time members of East Heights United Methodist Church where she was an active member of United Methodist Women. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Claude; her parents, Herbert and Vida Schultz; brothers, Jerry Schultz, Jay Schultz (June), Bill and Barbara Magruder, Bennie Lee, Ben Dwyer, Roy Kautz. She is survived by her son, Ron (Barbara) of Wichita; daughter, Cynthia Henderson (David) of Overland Park, KS; stepdaughters, Marita Lee of Derby, Shirley Dwyer, Claudia Elliott (Harold) and Roberta Kautz of Wichita; grandchildren, Karlie Cooper (Adam) of Kansas City, MO, Ashley Elaine Mann and Nathan Mann of Wichita, Katherine Henderson of Overland Park, KS; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; sister, Sandra Renard of Wichita; sister-in-law, Judy Schultz of Cherokee Village, AR; nephews, nieces, and close friends. When Claude and Elaine retired from Airtechnics their son, Ron, took over the company and they spent time at their lake house at Holiday Island, AR, where they played golf and enjoyed the lake and their family visiting them. When Claude died in 1996, Elaine's life came to a stand-still. Her grandchildren were the most important part of her life. She had always dreamed of getting a college degree and now she had the time. After encouragement from her son and Barbara, and a meeting with the head nontraditional students at Wichita State University, Elaine was on the road to achieve her dream. She graduated magna cum laude from Wichita State University in 2004 at the age of 80. She had always enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and wanted them to remember her for more than just baking chocolate chip cookies. After college, she had time for Grace Med Guild where she volunteered for several years, UMW at East Heights Church, Chapter FM of PEO, Thursday Afternoon Music Club, Women's Association of Wichita Symphony and her beloved book club. Funeral Service is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 12, 2016, at East Heights United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Grace Med, 1122 N. Topeka, Wichita, KS 67214. Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Share tributes online at: www.dlwichita.com
