Dec 03, 1928 - Dec 14, 2016
This obituary is administered by:
KORHUMELEileen Murtagh Surrounded by the love of her four children, Eileen Murtagh Korhumel, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on December 14, 2016.A lifelong Toledo resident, Eileen was born on December 3, 1928 to Owen and Alma Murtagh. Throughout her school years at Gesu and St. Ursula Academy, Eileen worked at Stop and Shop, a grocery store founded by her father. As a member of the Greatest Generation, Eileen encountered colorful characters who became the basis for her beloved stories. She never tired of telling these stories, in the tradition of her proud Irish heritage. At the close of WWII, Eileen enrolled at Marymount College, in Tarrytown, NY, graduated in 1950, and returned to Toledo to marry George Mayers Korhumel and begin family life. When their youngest entered high school, Eileen began to direct more of her time to the poor and elderly. While volunteering with The Little Sisters of the Poor, Eileen became keenly aware of the medical needs of the elderly and quietly began taking classes at Owens Technical College. She graduated as an RN in 1979 and later earned a degree in Gerontology. In 1988, she opened Mary's Adult Day Care, the first respite day care center in Northwest Ohio. For this pioneering achievement, she received outstanding service recognition from The Ohio House of Representatives. In 1993, she expanded her efforts by volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children and adolescents.Perhaps Eileen's most fulfilling work came from bringing the Eucharist to the elderly and homebound in Toledo. For over 20 years, she reserved Thursdays for visiting and praying with friends. Eileen's Catholic faith animated her life. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and a particular admiration for St. Padre Pio. She visited Marian sites such as Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe, Medjugorje, and Ephesus, and St. Padre Pio's remote place of prayer and work in San Giovanni, Italy.Eileen also had a keen eye for history in the making. With her good friend Pat Smith, she attended celebrity court trials, Lady Diana's Funeral, and the Memorial for Rosa Parks. These adventures provided encounters tailor-made for her storytelling talent. Eileen lived life and sought to bring joy to others.Preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, George Korhumel; her sister, Alma (Murtagh) Kenney; her brothers, James Murtagh and William O. Murtagh - they shared a generation like no other.Eileen is survived by her four children, Kathy (Ralph) Dise, Karen (Stephen) Weidner, Timothy (Janice) Korhumel, and Ann (Charles) Filipiak; 14 grandchildren, Molly, George, Eileen, Megan, Ginny, Kelly, Kevin, Timothy, Krissy, Linde, Catherine, Charles, Louie, and Elizabeth; and 6 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary being said at 7:30. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd., Toledo, OH 43607. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to St. Francis de Sales High School, 2323 W.
