This obituary is administered by:

A Life Well Lived

Edith Maffitt,(nee Lydic) born February 22, 1931, passed away at the West Chester Care Facility in Bakersfield, California on March 1 2019. She was 88 years old.

Edith is survived by five children, Alice Mishkin (husband Jonathan) of New York, Karen Taylor ( husband Ronald), of California, Paul Prosky, (wife Xhevrije), of Michigan, Susan de Piocciotto, of Colorado, and David Prosky, of Michigan. Edith was the proud grandmother of fourteen grand children and nine great-grand children.

She was preceded in death by her husband Louis Prosky, her second husband Robert Maffitt, and her daughter, Charlene Prosky.

Edith was born during the Great Depression to Vernie, (nee Rummel) and Elmer Lydic, on a dairy farm in Greene Township, Pennsylvania.

She often told young people that she had to milk four cows every morning before she went to school. At the age of 18 she left home and worked many jobs including one as a “Rosie the Riveter” in a munitions factory, where she made bullets for the American soldiers in the Korean War.

She moved to Ohio, then Michigan where she married Louis Prosky, the man she called “the love of my life.” Edith became a homemaker and spent many years raising her six children. Neighborhood children would flock to her home hoping for some good food or a slice of her homemade pie.

Edith called many places home - Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and New York, but in March 2016 she left snow country for good and moved to sunny California. Edith was an avid reader and an accomplished quilter. She enjoyed drawing artwork at the Rasmussen Senior Center in Oildale, California. She loved all things in nature, especially watching wild birds. Edith loved being home and spent many hours of comfortable companionship with her 18 pound tom cat.

Edith was a part of the “Greatest Generation” and was a great lady who touched many lives. She will be missed.

A memorial service for Edith will be held in July in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania.

what can I say? Edith was such a wonderful caring person. Every year Edith, Aunt Marianne, and Aunt Bertie( Birdy as the kids called her ) would take a cross-country trip and visit everyone. When my mom was in the hospital and they visited, we said, hey stay at my mom's place. So they did and finished all my mom's sewing projects for her grandkids. When my mom passed, Edith said, I'm not trying to take your mom's place, but this little girl needs a grandma right now. I have loved and respected her ever since. Such a wonderful person! Grandma Prosky was a huge person in my daughter's eyes and since we raised Paul's son with my daughter together for about 14 years, we were always with Grandma, drove to Pennsylvania and then Ohio to visit. Moved to Ohio, for a short time to be near her. I have nothing but respect and love for this great woman! So sorry to hear of her passing. She will always be remembered in our hearts.
