Edgar Poe, 40, of Richmond, Virginia, passed on October 07, 1849. Edgar was born on January 19, 1809. Sadly, Poe has passed, yet no one truly knows what happened, people say that Poe may have passed from either suicide, murder, cholera, hypoglycemia, rabies, syphilis, and influenza. Evidence of the influence of alcohol is strongly disputed.

Poe was born to traveling actors, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, David Poe, Jr., in Boston on January 19, 1809, but within three years both of his parents had died. Poe was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia, while his brother and sister went to live with other families.

When Poe was 6, he went to school in England for 5 years. He learned Latin and French, as well as math and history. He later returned to school in America and continued his studies. Edgar Allan went to the University of Virginia in 1826.

Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, critic, and editor best known for evocative short stories and poems that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world. His imaginative storytelling and tales of mystery and horror gave birth to the modern detective story.

In the late 1830s, Poe published Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, a collection of stories. It contained several of his most spine-tingling tales, including "The Fall of the House of Usher," " Ligeia" and "William Wilson." Poe launched the new genre of detective fiction with 1841's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." A writer on the rise, he won a literary prize in 1843 for "The Gold Bug," a suspenseful tale of secret codes and hunting treasure. Poe became a literary sensation in 1845 with the publication of the poem "The Raven." Continuing work in different forms, Poe examined his own methodology and writing in general in several essays, including "The Philosophy of Composition," " The Poetic Principle" and "The Rationale of Verse." He also produced another thrilling tale, "The Cask of Amontillado," and poems such as "Ulalume" and "The Bells." These were some of his greatest accomplishments.

1809 - Edgar Poe is born on January 19, in Boston. Thomas Jefferson is President of the U.S.A. 1810 - Edgar's parents separate. Elizabeth Poe takes the children. Beethoven composes his famous piano piece, Fur Elise. 1814 - British forces burn Washington D.C. during the war of 1812. 1817 - James Monroe becomes the 5th President of the U.S.A.1820 - Edgar attends the academy of William Burke, succeeds in athletics. 1825 - John Allan inherits a fortune when his uncle dies.1826 - Edgar attends the University of Virginia, goes by " Edgar Poe". 1827 - Poe drops out of school because John Allan won't give him any money. Poe can't support himself so he joins the United States Army. 1828 - Edgar Poe does well in the Army, attains the rank of sergeant major. 1829 - Poe and John Allan temporarily reconcile their differences. Poe applies to West Point, John Allan sponsors him. 1831 - Poe deliberately gets kicked out of West Point. 1832 - Poe submits a number of stories to magazines. They are rejected. 1833 - Poe sends a desperate letter to John Allan asking for help and is ignored. 1834 - John Allan dies and leaves Edgar nothing in his will. 1835 - Poe wins a contest for "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle ". From this contest, Poe finally gets a job. 1836 - Edgar Poe marries his cousin Virginia in May. She is 13. 1842 - Virginia Poe breaks a blood-vessel while playing the piano. 1843 - Poe wins a hundred dollar prize for "The Gold-Bug". Poe moves back to New York City. 1845 - Poe was working 14 hour days but still couldn't make a living. 1846 - Poe sues another paper for libel and wins. The suit is settled for $225.00. 1847 - Poe's wife, Virginia, dies from tuberculosis on January 30. 1849 - June 30 - Poe leaves NYC and visits John Sartain in Philadelphia. July 13 - Poe goes to Richmond and stays at the Swan Tavern Hotel. Poe joins the "Sons of Temperance" in an effort to stop drinking. Poe lectures on "The Poetic Principle". Sept 27 - Poe leaves Richmond and goes back to Philadelphia. Sept 30 - Poe apparently gets on the wrong train and goes to Baltimore. Oct 3 - Poe is found half-conscious and is taken to a hospital. Edgar Allan Poe dies on October 7, 1849.
Poe was buried at Westminister Presbyterian Church, Baltimore, MD, on October 9, 1849. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Virginia.
