Eddie A. SmithAge: 68 • Raleigh, NCEddie A. Smith, age 68, formerly of Staunton, Va., passed away on March 4, 2017 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Eddie was born on November 14, 1948, the son of Odie William Smith and Irene Michael Smith. The family grew up in Parnassus, Va. and Eddie attended Parnassus Elementary School, North River Junior High, and Buffalo Gap High School, graduating in 1967. He then attended The College of William and Mary, earning an A.B. degree in Business Administration in 1971. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.Eddie spent the majority of his working career at American Airlines until his retirement in 2003. He took great advantage of his travel benefits with American Airlines and traveled extensively throughout his entire adult life. He also served as an airline ambassador, making trips abroad to gather and hand-deliver humanitarian aid to children in need worldwide, including countries in South America, Africa and Asia. He was very proud to have been able to help in this way, using his travel benefits to aid the poor and repressed. He loved to photograph each and every place he visited in his travels and had a very large collection of photo albums covering cities, towns, villages and states from all over the U.S. and the world. He was also an avid music lover and passed that passion on to his very musically talented children.Eddie was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rodney E. Smith.He was married to Barbara F. Goldstein, formerly of Bethesda, MD for nearly 20 years and their marriage produced two surviving children, Shane D. Smith of Raleigh, NC and Jenna F. Smith of New York, NY.Other survivors include two brothers, Odie W. Smith, Jr. (Bill) and Michal E. Rose of Charlottesville, Va and White Sulphur Springs, WV, and their children, Mariah, Matthew and Daniel, and Gary A. Smith and his wife Mary Jo Ramsey-Smith of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and their children, Noah Ramsey-Smith and Annie Ramsey-Smith Pitts. Two additional nieces, Kari Smith and Carly Smith of Harrisonburg and TImberville also survive.Eddie has been cremated and a Celebration of His Life will be held by family members at a later date.
