Dorothy Mae Starr SaylerOctober 30, 1918 - September 5, 2014Dorothy M. Starr Sayler, 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Caldwell on September 5, as a result of complications from a fall on August 15. Her two daughters, Susan Watson and Sharon Starr, were at her side as she went to her heavenly rest. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 19, 2:00 p.m., at Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 S. Kimball Ave, Caldwell. Condolences may be shared with Dorothy's family at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com Dorothy was born on October 30, 1918 in Caldwell, the fourth child of Benjamin R. and Myrtle M. Huston. She attended Pleasant Ridge Grade School and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1936. She enjoyed telling people that she was a lifelong native of Caldwell, Idaho. On her 20th birthday, she married Harlan F. Starr, also a lifelong Caldwellite. They attended grade school and high school together and, upon their marriage, established their residence on Lower Pleasant Ridge Road where they lived for 55 years until Harlan's passing in 1993. They began their family in 1944 with the birth of their oldest child, Sharon, followed six years later by their son, Stan, and finally, after another six years, by their second daughter, Susan. She was fond of saying how lucky she was to have had two girls and a boy.In 1995, Dorothy married her second husband, Harold Sayler. Although Harold passed away less than two years after their marriage, they enjoyed many good trips and pleasant times together, filling the void in both their lives from having recently lost beloved spouses. Another of Dorothy's favorite sayings was how lucky she was to have had two wonderful husbands.Dorothy spent many years as a stay-at-home mother, interspersed with work in the retail sector. Her first job, in the late 30's and early 40's, was as a clerk in Woolworth's Five & Dime on Main Street. In the 60's she worked part-time at Becker Hardware on Kimball, and later began working full-time as the store manager at Miss KG in Karcher Mall and its successor company, Conrad's. She always took pride in her appearance and, while never extravagant, she always carefully coordinated her wardrobe. Dorothy was the founding member of The Thirty-Nine Club, a Pleasant Ridge pinochle group that met monthly from 1939 until it finally disbanded in about 2009-seventy years of friendship between any number of local couples. She and Harlan were avid rock hounds in the 40's and 50's, and enjoyed numerous trips deep into the Owyhees with their friends in search of beautiful petrified specimens. The largest of these, a massive 10-foot long log, was a prized possession. Dorothy was a talented amateur artist, and she belonged to an association of local artists in the 60's. A later interest was motorhome camping, and she and Harlan (and then Harold) went on many outings with the Caldwell Ramblers and the Winnebago Club. Her travels during her married life took her to Hawaii several times, throughout the US, to Europe, to Costa Rica and, of course, frequently to Washington and Oregon to see children and grandchildren. After Harold's death in 1995, Dorothy began travelling more with her daughter Sharon, sometimes accompanied by other family members as well. They made several trips to Hawaii, France and Palm Springs, as well as to Alaska, Mexico and Sweden. She also travelled extensively in Oregon and Washington in connection with Sharon's duties with Rotary International, making many Rotary friends along the way. She received "Honored Guest" status at the Lake Oswego Rotary Club, and she was also named a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.Closer to home, she recently enjoyed going to the Spot Restaurant in Marsing, owned by daughter Susan and her husband Steve. She could frequently be found sitting at a table, working her favorite puzzles and chatting with some of the regular customers. She loved to play Upwords and rummy, and was always ready for a game. She also developed a lively interest in Portland Trailblazers Basketball, and was able to attend several games over the last couple of seasons.Dorothy was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents and her two brothers, Ben S. Huston and Hoyt Huston. She is survived by her three children, Sharon Starr of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Stan Starr (Laurie) of Bellingham, Washington, and Susan Watson (Steve) of Marsing, Idaho. She is also survived by her older sister, Rosabelle Root, of North Richland Hills, Texas; six grandchildren, Lori Burton, Heidi Kann, Sara Watson, Adam Starr (Connie), Sally Heffner (James) and Betsy Starr; three great granddaughters, Katie Kann, Carol Kann and Lucy Starr; and three nephews, Marvin, Steve and Len Root.The family wishes to express appreciation to Heart 'n' Home Hospice for the excellent care provided Dorothy during her final illness.
