Dorothy Helmut, 92, of Merino, passed away early Monday morning, July 17, 2017 at the Medical Center of The Rockies in Loveland, Colorado. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, July 21, at Chaney - Reager Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, July 22, at Chaney- Reager with Reverend Orville Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at the Merino Cemetery. Dorothy was born on September 12, 1924 to Alonzo and Hilma (Carlson) Mustard in Eureka Kansas. She grew up in Sterling Kansas where she met and married her husband Gordon Thompson on December 28, 1946 then moved to Sterling, Colorado where they started their family and had 6 children. Gordon passed away in February 1965. Dorothy married Harry Helmut on August 19, 1967 in Trinidad, Colorado and moved to Harry's farm in Merino, Colorado where she enjoyed helping Harry on the farm, especially at harvest time. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking, gardening, upholstering and playing with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crafts, word puzzles, playing cards and computer games. Dorothy worked at Great Western Sugar Company, where she was foreman of the beet lab for over 20 years. She owned and worked at the Golden Spur Bar in Merino for over 30 years where her many friends enjoyed her famous chili and hamburgers. During this time she also worked as the laundry supervisor at Rose Arbor/Sterling Living Center for 12 years. She is survived by her 6 children, two sons; Gordon Thompson and wife Cindy of Blackhawk, Darryl Thompson of Potter Nebraska and Joni Thompson of Sterling, four daughters; Barbara Swingle and husband Rudy, Hilma Waitley and husband Dan of Sterling, Beverly Cook and husband Hal of Parker, Bonnie Amen and husband Tom of Brush; 11 grandchildren, Darney Swingle and wife Kathy, Crystal Hershbergber and husband Russell, Shawn McChesney and wife Janene, Sherrie Nerim and husband Chuck, Gordon Thompson III and wife Chrysa, Amy Carr and husband Astral, Ryan Thompson and wife Krystle, Randi Blake and husband Danny, Zachary Amen and wife Crystal, Alexander Amen and wife Sheyenne and Alissa Waitley; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Hilma Mustard, her husbands, Gordon Thompson, and Harry Helmut, two brothers, Alonzo and Ira Mustard and one great- grandson, Darney Swingle Jr. Memorials contributions may be made to the Dorothy Helmut memorial fund in care of Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, PO Box 1046, Sterling, CO 80751.
