Dorothy Boreiko Obituary

Jan 14, 1926 - May 20, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Boreiko, Dorothy B.Dorothy (Dot) Bray Boreiko passed away peacefully at her own home In Lexington, MA on May 20, 2016 after a brief illness. Dot was born on January 14, 1926 at home in the Walnut Beach neighborhood of Milford, CT. Dot was born one of nine children to Elizabeth Russell Bray and Berkley Charles Bray. Dot was the widow of beloved husband John Vincent Boreiko who passed away in 2015.Dot grew up on Naugatuck Avenue just a few blocks from her beloved Walnut beach where she developed a love for the ocean. Dot used to joke that she had salt water in her veins and few people doubted it. Dot graduated from Milford High School while also working in a local photo shop to help support her family. Dot learned responsibility early in life not just because her family was hit hard by the Great Depression but because as the youngest daughter, it also fell to her to care for her ailing parents. Despite these personal and financial hardships, Dot always talked about how fortunate she was to have grown up along the shore of the Long Island Sound as a "beach kid". Shortly after the World War II, Dot met and fell in love with John Boreiko who had just returned from the war as a decorated navigator on a B-17 bomber. Dot and John were married in 1948 and their marriage was to last 67 years until John's passing in 2015. Dot and John's love and respect for each other was a constant and defining feature of their marriage. Dot was a proud homemaker and she adored her three children — Craig Boreiko of Chapel Hill, NC, spouse Karla Dunn Boreiko, Janice Boreiko of Maynard, MA and Thomas Boreiko of Lexington, MA, spouse Alison Coolidge. She was also the beloved grandmother of four grandchildren — Nathan Boreiko (North Carolina), Alyssa Boreiko (North Carolina), John Boreiko (England) and Alison Boreiko (Massachusetts). Her husband's long career in polymer chemistry brought them to live over the years in a number of different places including Sudbury, MA, Jasper, GA, Huntingdon, PA, Millstone, NJ, and Browntown, VA before finally moving to Lexington, MA in retirement. Sudbury was by far their place of longest and favorite residence while Milford, CT was always regarded as "home." Dorothy was raised to have a strong sense of community service and she served for many years as an active volunteer in the Sudbury, MA public schools. Dorothy was happy to help out wherever she was most needed but was often found working in the school library or assisting with student eye exams and hearing tests. Dorothy also volunteered for her local Methodist church and never missed a church bake sale. Dot loved all creatures big and small. Dot could work miracles on a sick pet, a baby bird fallen from its nest, an orphaned squirrel or any injured animal that needed her attentive care and a place to convalesce. Among her other passions, Dot loved to cook and bake especially for John, her children, her grandchildren and of course her church. Dot was also passionate about music and loved to sing at every opportunity — often around the house as she did chores. Among her favorite artists were Ray Charles, Conway Twitty and George Jones. Perhaps her favorite song was "I Can't Stop Loving You" by the same Ray Charles. Most of all Dot is best remembered for her delightful sense of humor. With a twinkle in her eyes and a keen wit, she was quick to make others laugh. Friends and family remember this as one of her most enduring qualities and one that she carried with her even in her final days.
