Donald L. ScottGrimes formerly of Guthrie CenterDonald Lester Scott was born on August 26, 1930, to Lester and Florence (Moore) Scott at home in Fansler, Iowa. He passed away March 2, 2017, at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, Iowa.Don was the middle child, arriving between his sisters Julia and Virginia. He was raised on the banks of the Raccoon River where as a boy he helped by feeding the lone mule at the Scott Coal Mine on the weekends during the winter months. He also helped on the family farm. Don attended rural country school for the primary grades and then transferred to Guthrie Center.Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. In 1954 Don married the love of his life, Marilyn Scholz, in Schaller, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Phillip (Cathy) Scott of Panora, Donnell (Scott) Vogel of Kiel, WI, and Alan (Russell) Scott of Jefferson. Don had a love for and respect of the land. He was a meticulous farmer and farmed all of his married life until he and Marilyn moved off the farm to Guthrie Center. He was known to bring Marilyn fragrant wild plum blossoms in the spring and bittersweet from the fence row in the fall. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and later joined the Guthrie Center Lions Club. He was the 1988 Winner of the local Izaak Walton League Windbreak Award for his beautiful 500 foot, three row windbreak.Don and Marilyn enjoyed traveling, especially in their retirement. Trips to Oregon, Alaska, Nova Scotia, and hiking up Beyer's Peak in Colorado were a few favorites. He had a quick wit and easy laugh, and he enjoyed socializing with friends, often over cribbage or coffee. Don and Marilyn enjoyed many years of square dancing together and even tried zip-lining to mark Marilyn's 80th birthday. In November of 2016 they moved to Kennybrook Village, on the day following their 62nd wedding anniversary.In addition to his wife and children, Don is survived by his beloved grandchildren. Michelle and husband Shaun Dungan of Colorado Springs, CO; Heather Scott and significant other Jeremy Munch of Guthrie Center; Samuel Vogel of LaCrosse, WI; and David Vogel of Kiel, will all miss his unconditional love and his support of their individual interests. Don is also survived by his sister, Julia Scott, brothers-in-law Dean Flanery, John (Lynn) Scholz, and Richard (Carol) Scholz, as well as other relatives and many dear friends. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Virginia Flanery.A visitation will be held at Twigg Funeral Home in Panora on Sunday, March 5 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held for Donald on Monday, March 6 at 10:30 a.m at the Panora United Methodist Church. A private family burial of his cremains will be held later at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter.The family would like to thank the staff at Kennybrook Village, Suncrest Hospice, the doctors and staff at both the Des Moines VA and Mercy West, Dr. Susan Espeland, Rev.
