Air Force Mechanic & Owner of Gold Coast Helicopters Earns His Wings

Donald Charles Bomback, Sr. passed away on January 4, 2020 having just celebrated his 86th birthday.  He was born in Los Angeles, California on December 30, 1933, the second of three sons born to Ludwig and Elizabeth Bomback, whom everyone knew as Charlie and Betty.  Following his graduation from Miami High, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Bryan, and served as a Tech Sargent in the United States Air Force where he was trained as a helicopter mechanic and was a member of the 55th Air Rescue Squadron in Thule, Greenland during the Korean War conflict.  With his wife Joyce, Don had two sons, Don Jr. and Devin.  Following his military service, he completed his pilot training at Embry Riddle and started Gold Coast Helicopters, where he owned and operated a sightseeing business along with his son, Devin.  Gold Coast Helicopters remained a landmark in Dade County for over 30 years.

When the passing of his wife left Don a widower in his thirties, Joyce’s sister, Jean, helped care for his two teenage boys, and eventually, they fell in love and were married on June 29, 1973.  Together, they had a daughter, Joyce and were married for 46 years.

Don was particularly proud of the home he built (largely with his own two hands) at 15220 South River Drive, which remained the family home until after his retirement.

Don is predeceased by his first wife Joyce; his two sons Don Jr. and Devin; his parents Charlie and Betty, and his brother Jerry.

He is survived by his devoted wife Jean; his daughter Joyce (Nick) Rohe and their children Luke, Faith Grace and Caleb; his daughter-in-law Diana and her children Donald III, Dayna (John) Kasimier, and Daniel; and his brother David, as well as many other loved ones.
