Donald C. MacKenzie, Sr. 86, of Plantsville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 20, 2016, at the Southington Care Center. Donald was born on June 25, 1930, he was the son of Walter N. MacKenzie and Zillah (Jordan) Thurston. He worked as a header man at Southington Hardware, Crescent Tool and DACK Industries. When he retired he spent his mornings working for his son, Donald, at R&D Services repairing tools and small motors. He had a strong aptitude for designing and making tools to complete a job quickly and easily. Tinkering in his workshop was a favorite past time. Well known and loved by all he met, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Theresa (Mauro) MacKenzie; his daughter Cathy and her husband Arthur Myers of Bristol; his son Donald C. MacKenzie Jr. and his wife Rita of Southington; and his daughter Lori-Jo and her husband Mark Saucier of Plantsville; Linda (Zalaski) Cheeseman of Newington; Lucy (Renda) and husband Robert Sorice of Bristol; Theresa (Renda) and husband Robert Gambordella of Bethany;16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Roland MacKenzie, along with many loving and supporting nieces and nephews and dear friends. Special mention of his close friends Ralph Sweat and Frank Owens. He was predeceased by stepsons Joseph and Nicholas Renda; brother, Eugene N. MacKenzie, and sister Diane (Thurston) Linkenbach. The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Southington Care Center for their loving care and support. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at 1 pm at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington Calling hours will be on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, from 11 am -1 pm Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
